i have a slow broadband speed problem for quite some time now and have read loads of the topics on here about similar problems but i cant seem to find anyone who has just been connected with the same problem as me.
i have had my Orange broadband connection since 28 nov 2009 and have not received a speed of over 512kbps at all. (average speed has been 200 to 300kbps)
i have tested my broadband speed at least twice a day since 1st or 2nd of dec 2009 on speedtester.BT.com on Three different computers 2 macs and 1 pc and Orange have had BT test my line on 5 separate occasions which have all come back with no faults.
they also have told me that my line can receive a 20mb, 8mb and 2mb connection on separate occasions.
i am using a siemens gigaset se572 router supplied by Orange i have 2 of these and i have tested my connection using both of them numerous times.
so now for the questions:
is there anything i can do to help resolve this issue my self? as Orange told me tonight that they would have to do another line test (yip line test number 6) in order to help resolve the problem although im not sure how this will help.
also i have contacted BT and o2 (now Sky) to enquire about what service they could offer me and they advised me they could give me up to 8mb and up to 20mb respectively. i now have no idea what speed my line can actually give. i checked online and most of the line tests where you enter phone number etc say it will only support up to 8mb but can i trust those sites? what speed can i actually receive?
i have had enough to be honest as i have payed for a service i have not been getting (at all) and am worried that Orange will try and charge me for cancelling my broadband contract should i just bite the bullet and ask for my MAC?
i have tested my broadband speed at least twice a day since 1st or 2nd of dec 2009 on speedtester.BT.com
Can you post the results ?

Does BT pay you rent for having their exchange in your garden ?
Output power is way, way down...usually that's an exchange equipment problem or a router failure.
i dont have most of the results of my tests as ive done so many now but the last time i tested 3 times in one day was on the 1st of jan 2010 and i had to keep the results to tell an Orange call centre operator.
this was while plugged into the test socket behind the BT wall panel with my macbook pro connected with eithernet cable to the router.
lol. the exchange is pretty close, the building is only 100 metres from my flat and their cables between there and my flat are about 200 metres long acording to the BT technical call centre operator.
i have tryed both my routers but they are both exactly the same type of router sent to me by Orange the siemens Gigaset one i mentioned earlier. i will borrow a router from a friend and try that to see if it helps.
the BT tech call centre op, that told me about the distance, advised me that there was no problem with the exchange and could not connect me to anyone at the exchange its self for me to ask some one there.
That's not the full BT speedtester results, they look something like this :

i was quite pleased to see the second test result last night and thought that my problems had actually been resolved by Orange until i got the results of the last test today.
i then phoned Orange as requested by the Orange contact centre operator i spoke to the other day as he said all relevant work/tests would be completed by today. said operator was to be honest down right rude to me on the phone so i requested to be put through to the cancellation line and after about an hour of arguing i managed to get them to give me my MAC without charging me a fee for breaking contract.
this was achieved by speaking to 2 managers and getting them to agree that they had broken their contract by not giving me the service i am paying for.
i have since contacted o2 (now Sky) and given them the MAC code so i am soon to be an ex Orange customer which i am very happy about.
ive put in a complaint about the operator who was rude to me and a general complaint to Orange about the level of service ive had and the dreadfull internet speeds i was receiving.
i will be keeping an eye on my account to verify that Orange take no more payments from it.
ive got the name and extension number of the manager i spoke to in cancellations so if i get charged again i will be calling him straight back.
im an o2 (now Sky) mobile customer so im going onto their premium package for cheeper than normal. not sure if that entails their access product but if at least if i dont get the connection im looking for i wont have to call india as the o2 (now Sky) call centre is in glasgow. their customer service has to be better than Orange surely.

thought id let you guys know that my connection is grand now. from the second that my o2 (now Sky) connection was started the problem went away. i have no idea what Orange were up to or why is was not fixed but i will never be an Orange customer again thanks to this dreadful experience.
thanks again to every one for all your help and support.

Glad to hear it.
And since I've been on 02 myself, my average speed is about 15/16 meg. Orange said the maximum they could give is 4 meg
