I have been having a nightmare with this for the last month or so. What keeps happening is as follows:
you click on a link, nothing happens, just get the scrolling wheel at the top of the tab, then you re-click the link and it works normal. This is the same with nearly every link you click on, sometimes pages part load then stop, other times they don't load at all. once stopped they never complete loading, they all take from 2 clicks to about 6 or so to get a page up.
the only other way round this is to click on reload, but sometimes it takes 4 or 5 attempts to get a page to completely load, even registering on here took a few attempts to get it complete.
MS outlook also pops up an error box every 10 mins or so which says something along the lines of a connection that timed out (POP3)
I have reported it to Orange, they phoned me back and went through a dns flush, part of the "try this, try that" seemed to indicate that if the numbers version of a web address was used it loaded straight up. Anything they went to helped for a few minutes but it is getting worse now not better. i have tried re-booting the live box a couple of times.
This is the same for my pc which is a cable connection and my laptop which is wireless.
It seems worse at peak usage times.
Can anyone offer help please before i go mental with it??

If IP addresses are working for websites instead of the domain names, sounds like a DNS problem. Orange occasionally have problems with their DNS servers.
The livebox obtains what DNS servers to use automatically from Orange, however you can override these settings on your PC, rather than the livebox.
This site states these settings:
Quote:
DNS
Domain name service is dynamic - but if domain name server (DNS) addresses are required, you should use:
* 195.92.195.94 and 195.92.195.95
Or, if you experience problems with the above, use:
* 193.36.79.101 and 193.36.79.100
Though 80.10.246.1 seams also in use as an alternate address.
How ever some users have had success using non Orange servers such as those provided by opendns.
OpenDNS settings are:
Quote:
Please write down your current DNS settings before switching to OpenDNS, in case you want to return to your old settings for any reason.
You can choose which servers to use. Some have set Orange as their primary and opendns as their alternate.
People have used this to get around temporary outages. If you are having permanent probs, you could try to get Orange support to fix the underlying fault.
If none of this works set it back to "Obtain DNS server address automatically" for it to go back to using the livebox addresses.
I've tried the different DNS settings, all seems to help for a while put the problems keep returning including outlook error (is this connected to dns settings or a different issue?)

any other things i can check?
thanks
the outlook issue, try logging into your mail via their webmail system and clearing any junk mail from it. If too many are stored on the server it can take too long for it to sort what needs to be downloaded.

Hi colin
You know, I'm having exactly the same problem as you. I'm not sure if it's affecting certain areas of the UK (I'm in Yorkshire btw), but it might be a possibility.
This happened about a month ago for me too; and I've also gone through all the checks, tried alternative DNS addresses, but alas, still the same.
I'm giving Orange until the end of next week to sort it out. If they haven't, I'm off to 02
I seem to be having a similar problem today, and I've never noticed this before.
It was bad around 11am-2pm today but does, touch wood, seem to be fixed now.
I'm using a Livebox Mini, on 8mb package, exchange not LLU'd, and I am less than 400m away from the exchange, getting just over 7mb off-peak and a low ping (usually!)
Actually in the past hour I have been having issues too, in Peterborough for the record.
Back OK now..
Will be complaining also.
1st real issues with Orange in over 3 years, and having recently upgraded to homemax, and therefore tied in for another 16 months, I want this sorted naturally!
We have recently started getting an intermittent service (village outside March, Cambs).
Symptoms are failure of connection. The ADSL is connected OK, but pinging anything but the gateway fails (e.g. pinging IP address like the DNS servers fails, the only IP that works is the gateway IP address). This indicates that all is working fine on the ADSL link - its something further up the chain that is going pear shaped. It's not the DNS servers, as no IP address (baring the gateway) can be pinged.
After a while (can be hours), it recovers.
Tried lots of things included resetting the router and reentering all the data, hard wired and wireless linked PC's, but defo. at the Orange end.
Previously no problems with Orange (previously freeserve) at all (5 years, over two locations).
Where is the best email address to send issues to? Tried phone support but they know nothing.

No error message like "PPP server down" ?
Do emails send and receive ?
No, no TCP/IP connection at all, apart from the gateway IP address. As above, the ADSL connection is fine, so I get a network, but no connection further on than the gateway. So, no HTTP:, email, or network traffic in general.
Just for information, using my own wireless router (3COM), which has worked fine for the last Three years, maybe more. Use to have a LiveBox, but it really was a bit pants, unreliable and difficult to get set up right.
No TCP/IP connection at all, apart from the gateway IP address.
Have you tried run > cmd >
ipconfig /release
then
ipconfig /renew
or
netsh winsock show catalog
then
netsh winsock reset catalog
No, will try it next time, although I think is a problem upstream of me as when it happens it takes out my laptop (hard line to router), a Vista PC and a Linux PC (both wireless). Then they all recover at the same time.
I've tried rebooting router, restarting the linux wireless connection, rebooting Windows, but nothing helps until the link decides to come back on its own.
