I've had enough of Orange for a long time, it's my mum who has been reluctant to change ISP since they started charging to get the MAC code. But after returning from our holiday and receiving a letter from Orange to say they're raising the price to £19.99 a month, my mum has also changed her mind. Not only that, but they capped our connection forever in peak times and I cannot for the life of me play online on my PS3 in peak times due to serious lag. Oh, and it won't connect to the Livebox, and ethernet doesn't work sometimes either, as there's only two ethernet ports, apparently one doesn't support an internet line, so whatever.
The thing is, we're not sure which ISP to change to. I'd obviously like one which is pretty lax on their Fair Usage Policy, with unlimited downloads. My mum is looking at Sky broadband, because we have SkyTalk and SkyTV, so we'd be sure to get a good deal. However, due to me living in a 'not so supported area', according to their website I can only get 6mb. I'm currently on the infamous '8mb connection' with Orange, whether it is or not, I don't even know, but I wouldn't even be getting a fast connection with Sky if I changed, so much wouldn't be improving.
I have been looking at o2 (now Sky) though, as I heard they're pretty good, and that they bought out BeThere, which I hear are one of the best UK ISPs. o2 (now Sky) can offer me 7mb, according to their website, with unlimited downloads (doesn't mention FUP) but at around £22, unless you have o2 (now Sky) mobile, which I do but my mum doesn't, so I'm not sure if that changes things, but that would change the price to £17.
So I'm really not sure what to do. May I have some suggestions, please? (:
Firstly, you shouldn't need to pay for a MAC code.
You would only need to pay the remaining months fees if you are still in contract but not if your 12 months are up.
I just changed to o2 (now Sky) this week.
Placed the order on Tuesday (online), got an email on Wednesday stating my activation date and that my router has been sent out so very pleased with the service so far.
If your local phone exchange is LLU enabled you'll get o2 (now Sky)'s basic package for £12 a month.
Check here to find out if your exchange is LLU ....

Orange apparently told us that we need to pay to leave them now, not sure what went on there. It doesn't seem like I can get LLU, if you lick here http://www.samknows.com/broadb...ange/EAFME it doesn't seem like I can get much =(
Like I said, if you're still under a 12 month contract with them you'll need to pay the remaining months fees if you leave.
If not, you won't need to pay a thing.
Yes, your options are a bit limited if your exchange isn't LLU enabled but you should still be able to get a better deal than Orange are forceing you onto.
I've had major problems with Orange in the past too and this price increase was enough to persuade me to leave.
I nearly signed up to Sky who I hear are quite good too.
Sky and o2 (now Sky) will both give you non-LLU deals around £17 a month which is still cheaper than Orange.
I ended up joining o2 (now Sky) as they've been voted top ISP in the UK and they're offering unlimited usage whereas Sky had a 10GB monthly limit for around the same price.
I left the pathetic Orange a few years ago and went to Idnet who were fantastic.
Such a relief to get a proper service with fast, stable connection and a company that actually cares about its customers after being with Orange.
I then went to o2 (now Sky) about 18 months ago and they are absolutley fantastic; can't fault them at all.
Like yourself I play games online and the ping is always spot on and connection has never dropped once in 18 months.
Sorry to bump this, I've not been on here in a while. I still don't know what to do about our connection. It often disconnects on my computer sometimes too, while my mum is still online on her laptop and my PS3 is still online too. :/
