I have been with Freeserve / Orange since 2006 and haven't noticed any problems worthy of complaint until recently. Trying to play PS3 games online has suddenly (this last 2 weeks) become a joke, with apparently random periods where my speed drops-out to 0.2Mbps .
I spoke with Orange customer services, who suggested I visit Speedtester.BT.com to record my speeds at various times. The results of the last couple of days from here always appear far more acceptable than results from other testers such as Speedtest.net or BroadbandSpeedChecker.co.uk which would say 0.2-0.5Mbps about 30 seconds after i'd run a Speedtester.BT.com test which said 1350Kbps.
This meant the speeds that i got back to Orange Technical Services with weren't too bad - they said there appears to be no problem with the line. I tried to explain that the problem seemed to be intermittent (it basically disappears for an hour or two!), but got nowhere, either the guy didnt understand me, or just wanted rid of me.
My Livebox is getting on for 4 years old, could that be at fault? I'm only about a mile from my nearest exchange, which the customer services lady said ought to be able to happily give out 8meg (if i had that line).
Can anyone help me better diagnose what and where the problem is? I could really do with some help to narrow down what is at fault before i can press any points!?
Thanks for the reply, not sure exactly what you need, but i have guessed based on what other posters have put...
ADSL firmware version : A2pBT009c1.d17d
Connection mode : G.DMT
Type : Fast
Noise margin (dB) : 29.5
Attenuation (dB) : 27.0
Attainable download rate (kbps) : 9728
ADSL status : Connected [0]
EDIT: (missed this line)
Downstream Upstream
Rate (kbps) 2272 288
The www.speedtester.BT.com results all (annoyingly) come back fairly reasonable, i think i havent managed to catch it during a period where it is slow down (somehow!). The result i got a moment ago is below.
"1815kilo bits per second (Kbps), your service bandwidth will have been quoted to you in kilo bits per second.
BT would regard the speed ranges shown below as normal service:
For 250kbps End Users speeds between 50 - 250kbps.
For 500kbps End Users speeds between 100 - 500kbps.
For 1000kbps End Users speeds between 200 - 1000kbps.
For 2000kbps End Users speeds between 400 - 2000kbps.
You may now disconnect from the speed test account (click disconnect in your internet connection window) and if you wish to regain normal access to the internet please re-connect to your ISP using your usual username and password."
Like I said, 1800Kbps is pretty fair for a 2meg connection isnt it? I only wish it stayed there!
As i said in my original post, it seems to come and go with no rhyme or reason. Yesterday at just after 2pm (a Monday afternoon), i had results from www.speedtest.net of 0.26Mb/s. This poor rate continued until about half 3 when it picked up again. I have a series of screenshots of tests from this time if they would be of any use with the diagnosis?!
Re: the FIXED 2Mb connection, as far as i am aware, i am only entitled to 2Mb connection? I am not paying for anything faster (ie. an 8 or 20meg contract).
Are you saying that if i were to upgrade to Orange's 8Meg package i could expect to reliably receive speeds around 7-8Meg?
What about the issue with intermittent drops in speed, can you tell me anything from the details ive posted about what might be causing this issue?
Fixed connections are usually only used on problem lines.

Some older adsl connections may still be on a fixed rate line, or there some instances where long lines which have large SNR fluctuations don't perform too well on the "up to 8Mb" type accounts and can be moved back to a Fixed Rate Line.
I have just been looking at some of the 'checker' links on the Kitz URL you posted. I think i am confusing myself. When using the ADSL Exchange and Line Checker, it says, regarding my local exchange;
ADSL enabled: June 17, 2003
DSL Max enabled: March 30, 2006
Presumably my current Orange Home Broadband is "Fixed ADSL" from what you have said above and that i believed i had a contract with Orange for 2Mb. Could you clarify what you meant by

You need to make yourself a real nuisance with Orange to get this connection corrected.
Are you saying that i should actually be using the DSL Max, as part of my 2meg contract? Or is it that case that I need to effectively upgrade to this? Im unsure whether you mean there is a problem i need to get fixed.
Sorry to read you are having problems with your gaming and connection. I work for Orange and may be able to help.
If you can email your landline number/broadband account number and best contact number to customer.services@orange.co.uk, I'll give you a ring to discuss.
So I can pick up your mail quickly, please add 'Jonathan Orange Response' in the first line.
