I've been using Orange for sometime now and have never had amazing speeds even though I'm only a mile away from the exchange. originally I was getting speeds of 800kbps this was roughly a year ago but now I get a maximum download of 240kbps it's ridiculous! I don't know what's wrong and I've done numerous speed tests and phoned Orange so many times playing customer service roulette with people I can barley understand... my speed is also reduced during 6pm and 12am it goes to about 60kbps although this is probably because of the amount I download (we are a very heavy bandwidth using household 45gb+ is not uncommon for a month...)
I've just done a quick test using BT speedtester site and I don't really understand it much but I'm posting it below if anyone can:
The router is synching almost at maximum at 8096kbps.
The IP Profile, 7000kbps, is correct for that synch.
These look good and shows your throughput as 4950kbps which is not good for profile of 7000kbps. So if you have a NTE5 main BT socket (removable lower frontplate) plug the router into the test socket inside and check the results again.
The Assured Rate is done for services such as BT Vision.

OMG! you've just got yourself onto my christmas card list xD I'm currentley downloading a file at 700kbs! with the livebox connected into the socket behind the plate on the BT socket
but why???
I'll have to wait until 8pm to do the test again as there's a 3 hour minimum wait between tests...also my speed gets capped at 6pm =/
Just spoken to a friend on IM and he is 0.7miles away from the exchange and he gets an actual download speed of 4.36mb/s on BT Broadband I live 0.4 miles away and get 240kb/s and 700kb/s if I use the test socket on the main BT thing
See Map Below!
AIs me on Orange broadband only 0.4m away from the exchange on 700kb/s BIs my mate on BT Broadband only 0.7m away from the exchange on 4.3mb/s CIs the BT Exchange
Spoke to Orange this morning and there was no end to the fobbing off about how there was nothing wrong with my speed other then being a bit slow and that the line test would probably tell me that there's nothing wrong
I ad to pretend to be going through the palaver of disabling my antivirus and firewall to get the person to even talk to me about my internet speed!
If you have removed the bell wire it is very unlikely that you would notice any difference from using an iplate, that is apart from your wallet being lighter!
I did the bell wire thing and my DSL connection rate went from 5664kbps to 8000~8096kbps. The throughput also increased so that it can run up to 6240kbps, but being Orange it can also drop down to just over 3000kpbs when the network chokes, however the DSL rate remains stable and the IP profile remains at 7000kbps at all times.
