I've been a long time (approx. 2 years) satisfied Orange broadband customer with very good download speeds around 5Mbps until very recently when they have dropped to around 200 - 250kbps !!
I have already contacted the standard support number and undertaken tests & passed on the results as asked using speedtester.BT.com
The speedtester.BT.com website consistently also indicated a very slow download speed of approx. 220kbps but I noted it said that my "IP Profile" was set to 250kbps - surely this is not right? (even the upload speed was faster at 380kbps!)
Any thoughts or ideas? What should I do next?
I have already sent an email to Jonathan at Orange Response who is proactive on this forum, so hopefully things will now be resolved.
The call centre said last week things should be back to normal within 24 hours but so far no change....
p.s. Same download speeds from several PC's in the household and I have also tried different filters, cables & even another router so I think it must be the line or some sort of cap / throttling?
There is no "best" contact at Orange when it comes to getting a technical problem resolved especially when it means they have to phone BT to get it sorted. You just need to pester them daily until they realise you know what the problem is and how it can be resolved.....be a pain in the ar$e
Jonathan & all at Orange have been working on my case and my download speeds are now much better at around 2.8mbps. I thought I was up to around 5mbps before this event - how do the below results stack up? - should I expect any sort of further improvement over the next few days?
From what I can make out, it is the "IP Profile for the line" that is the real
limiting factor, currently set to 3000kbps - is that a correct assumption?
Results from speedtester.BT.com
Download speed achieved during the test was - 2723 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :3840 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 3000 Kbps
Information from Inventel (v5.10) Livebox
Connection mode : G.DMT
Type : Interleave
Noise margin (dB) : 15.6
Attenuation (dB) : 33.0
Attainable download rate (kbps) : 4320
ADSL status : Connected [0]
With an attenuation of 33dB on a good line with little noise, your router should sync. at 7680kbps with an IP Profile of 6500kbps, so no the results aren't particularly good and your connection problems still exist.
The probable cause is the SNRM of 15.6dB, it's too high and it looks like your Target SNR has been set at 15dB rather than 6dB so read these pages and work through the problem-solving bits >>>>

I am having the same problem with Orange, I have friends in the village on BT they get 8mb another friend on Virgin (not cable) he gets 7mb yet Orange told me today my exchange cannot support more than 2mb.
I pointed out to the guy that I have been getting 5mb peak times and over 7mb the rest of the time so how could it be that I was able to get more.
Big surprise he tried to fob me off with the old it must be your line might be the problem speach and that there provisions team would set it at the most stable rate.
I work for BT's broadband provisioning team so I am well aware of what is in that exchange and what it can do.
I have also had BT test the line and there are no faults with it. I was lucky enough that the drop wire was replaced a couple of years ago and I can plug my router right into the main socket so it is deffinetly not the line.
I work for <a href="http://btbb.at/theside?LID=21">BT</a>'s broadband provisioning team so I am well aware of what is in that exchange and what it can do.
Lucky you, so can't you use the knowledge of your work colleagues to arrange the necessary tweaks ?
I just can't understand why Orange seem to think my exchange cannot do more than 2mb here is the exchange code ESLTA
I could through a stone at the exchange and hit it is less than 100 meters away and my drop wire hits the pole then goes directly into the exchange so I should be getting a great speed so god knows what is going at Orange.
Run that for 24 hours and check the data for significant movements.
If it's not a noisy line then your IP Profile is stuck, this is the more likely because it's been happening quite a lot with IPStream recently.....you may want to report that to whoever in BTw
Thanks very much for the advice will give it a go.
They asked me to do Three speedtest 3hrs apart here is the second one
Download speedachieved during the test was - 90 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-250 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :8096 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 135 Kbps
Yes almost certainly a stuck profile....the 135kbps is a dead giveaway....there's nothing lower.
From the Kitz site :-
Quote:
~ "Stuck bRAS profile"
Although not quite so common these days as when dslMAX was first introduced, there is still the odd occasion when a line seems to get what is known as a stuck bRAS profile.
When your line is first profiled the theory is that the DLM system should set your IP profile in line with your sync speed within the first 75 mins. If a profile is not correctly set then the default value of 2048/2000 is used. This may clear within 3 days and it may help if you say leave your router switched off overnight... but some lines just seem to get "stuck".
From my own observations this mostly appears to happen on the better quality lines - ie ones that don't lose sync or need any automatic DLM configurations.
If you suspect a stuck bRAS on your line then you will have to contact your ISP asking them to get BTw to clear a stuck bRAS profile fault.
Things are slowing down again - here are the todays results (8th October 18:00)
Results from speedtester.BT.com
Download Speed achieved during the test was 1845 Kbps (compared to 2723 yesterday)
2000 Kbps Max Achievable Speed (compared to 7000 kbps yesterday)
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 400 to 2000 kbps (compared to 600-7150kbps yesterday)
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :2560 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 2000 Kbps (compared to 3000kbps yesterday)
Information from Inventel (v5.10) Livebox (8th October 2009 18:00)
Connection mode : G.DMT
Type : Interleave
Noise margin (dB) : 16.0
Attenuation (dB) : 34.0
Attainable download rate (kbps) : 2944
ADSL status : Connected [0]
Run this for 24 hours and watch the SNRM data to see if you get significant drops because that will cause the IP Profile to change which is what has happened inyour latest BT speedtester result.... 3000 down to 2000kbps which is a big drop, that's down 2 levels.
