I'm pretty new to Orange broadband after suffering with o2 (now Sky) for a while. Actually that's a bit harsh as it wasn't really o2 (now Sky) that my problems were with but rather the dreaded IP Profiling on BT lines. This meant I was always getting punished when my dodgy line re-synced at a lower than usual rate and I very rarely maneged to achieve download speeds of over 0.5Mbit.
Anyway, I switched to Orange thinking that I'd always be able to download at the speed I was synced at - wrong! It seems that Orange LLU do a kind of profiling too (think they seem to call it DLM) though not quite as bad as the BT one.
My experiences so far is that the Orange profile seems to update daily (anyone know at what time?) and basically equates to the maximum sync you've achieved in the previous 24 hours rounded down to the nearest 1/4 Mbit. Is this right?
So far I've managed to get up to 1.75Mbit on Satursday and Sunday (totally unprecedented on my phone line!) but this has now gone back down to 0.75Mbit due to a semi-dodgy re-sync yesterday.
Anyway, was just wondering if anyone knows how precisely the Orange DLM/Profiling system works so I can try and get the best out of the piece of string connecting my house to the exchange!

To my knowledge, it has not been made public but I believe it is specific to the up to 20 Mb LLU product and is by ALCATEL.

If your using the LiveBox then it'll tell you what it thinks is the highest attainable speed, this I think being based on your downstream attenuation.
What DLM seems to try to do is get to the best error free speed by adjusting the SNR margin. Changes seem generally to be applied overnight - certainly in my case. It's after the MSR (maximum stable rate).
Important factors seem to be:-
1. Keep the router permanently on during first month of connection. They'll tell you 10-14days but the reality seems to be much longer. Once the best setting is established this should not be so necessary.
2. Get the router as close to the BT master socket with , preferably , a shielded cable. Obviously connections should be filtered.
It seems to go down to rock bottom , in my case that was 1meg and then eventually start ramping up 1 "profile" setting/per day until the max stable speed is attained. Mine went from 1 to 2 to 4 to 6 etc
This is based on my experience and may not be gospel.

They don't seem to be altering the SNR on my line at all though - have been checking with Routerstats. The actual cap on the download speeds is something that is being enforced at the server end.
Do you think if makes a difference using the Livebox? I'm still using my Netgear at the moment - I prefer that cos I can play with it more using the custom firmware. If it does make a difference I might give the Livebox a whirl over the weekend.
As for why they feel the need for profiling...If you ask me profiling by any ISP is just an excuse to keep the bandwidth down for each user. If they really wanted you to get the best speeds they'd surely just let you download at the sync rate. The speed you can download at due to their profiling is not related to your current sync rate and hence snr anyway so the excuse that profiling is to make a more stable connection is surely nothing more than flim flam!
Sorry to read of your problems. I work for Orange and may be able to help.
If you can email your landline number/broadband account number and best contact number to customer.services@orange.co.uk, I'll give you a ring to discuss.
So I can pick up your mail quickly, please add 'Jonathan Orange Response' in the first line.
