Hi,
Situation: Currently staying with [non-tech] friends for a while who have a LiveBox configured to serve their single PC over wireless, using WPA and a shard key. All good stuff thinks I, log on to the LiveBox, find out the ¨WEP key¨, configure wireless networking on my laptop and I should be away.
But no. Having tried from XP and OSX I failt to get online via the LiveBox. The MAC is a little more helpful than XP (who'd have thought it....) in so much as it gave the impression that access-control might be in use on the router (LiveBox) - XP just times out with no feedback at all.
Signal strength is fine and I've tried looking around on the LiveBox webadmin (from the friends' PC which connects OK) and can't find any mention of MAC-address access-control etc. Is this normal practice for a LiveBox? Will it only serve one wireless client? Is its DHCP server limited to serving out addresses from a pool of 1?
You have to use the "pairing" function with the Livebox - it seems to serve the same purpose as MAC filtering by only allowing a small time window (default 10 minutes) to set up connection. Your friends should have the instructions but all you need to do is press button 1 on the Livebox when the radio aerial light should start flashing;you then have 10 minutes to connect.
