I hope you’ll be able to help me with my parents Orange connection!
My parents have just bought an HP Pavilion laptop that is running Vista. They have asked me to connect it to a Dlink 2740B router so that they can use it wirelessly. I can get it to connect to the wireless network but I can’t get the internet to run on it. The connection is fine and it is showing as connected to the network but other than getting Google main page to load, no other websites will load up, YouTube, Facebook, Yahoo etc. I can ping sites fine whilst it is connected to the wireless network. Do they need a livebox or should it run ok with just the Dlink Router?
At the moment they are using the Speedtouch modem which works fine, but they really want the wireless to work.
I’d be so grateful of any help, as i can't see what i have done wrong.
It could be that the router's MTU setting is conflicting with the PC because Vista manages these settings.
This is from the MTU and RWIN Tweaks link on the left menu on this page :-

It does not matter too much if the MTU on your router is higher than that on your PC, but the setting in your router must not be less than the MTU on your PC.
So go into the router config page and check the current setting, it's probably best if it's set to 1500.....worth a try

I tried to set the MTU to 1500 but everytime i did and went back into the setup, it had reverted back to 1492. Alas, I still am unable to wirelessly connect to the internet.
I have been reading the MTU and RWIN Tweaks page. Changing the MTU in Vista looks a rather difficult, and i am concerned about wrecking the OS of my parents new computer.
I've managed to set the MTU of the router to 1500 and it now stays the same on the setup screen. But this has still not fixed the problem, no pages will load up.
I forgot to mention that my parents have already installed a copy of Norton 360 on the laptop, could this be interfering with the wireless? Although when the laptop is connected to the Speedtouch Modem, it works fine.
The connection is fine and it is showing as connected to the network but other than getting Google main page to load, no other websites will load up, YouTube, Facebook, Yahoo etc. I can ping sites fine whilst it is connected to the wireless network.
This is why I thought it might be the MTU/RWIN setting.
When you search in Google can you click on any results at all ?
Sometimes IP addresses are "blacklisted" which prevents a website loading, but usually it only affects the odd site rather than several like YouTube, Facebook, Yahoo etc
It is installed on the laptop, although i have just been using Firefox to connect to the internet. Do you think it would be a problem with having IE8 on the laptop?
