Been with Orange for a fairly long time, since they were Freeserve in fact, and have been content with the service overall.
However, I've recently noticed my download speed has dropped significantly. Streaming a 3 minute song on youtube (with just one background picture) will take around 5 minutes.
I used to be able to download at around 75 kbps, but this has gone to a measly 8 at best.
I'm connected through a speedtouch ADSL which I've had for 5 years, and am unaware of any changes on our part, so I'm at a loss as to why the speed has dropped nearly 90% within a matter of days.

I think you need to contact Orange CS about your IP Profile. That clearly needs resetting to something higher. Orange need to contact BT to get that done.
Something has happened that's caused BT to drop your profile & only they can raise it.
I've had the same problem with speed reduction. Last week BT speedtester came up with:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 113 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-250 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :3168 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 135 Kbps
I emailed Orange and of course have had no reply except the automated acknowledgement.
I went away for the weekend and got the following on Monday wirelessly through my laptop:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 2300 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :3136 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 2500 Kbps
RESULT!
I've been keeping on eye on it and the speed is slowly dropping over the week, so today(thursday) it's:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 1867 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 400-2000 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :2784 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 2000 Kbps
So it's steadily reducing. I live in a small village 3miles from a rural non-LLU exchange. Over the weekend the electrical items not used were: immersion heater, low energy light bulbs, PC, monitor and printer. Since returning I only turned on the last 3 on wednesday, otherwise used the laptop. Environmentally we were under snow last week, which thawed over W/E and it snowed again on wednesday.
I have an original live box (Inventel I think). The following info extracted from it was:
Tuesday:
Noise margin (dB) : 6.2
Attenuation (dB) : 55.0
Attainable download rate (kbps) : 3392
ADSL status : Connected [0]
Which is better for the noise margin; a high or low figure?
Any clues on what might be causing the slowdown?
Should I change the filters?
Could it be the weather?
Interested in your thoughts.
Thanks, I'll try monitoring router stats. I have an NTE5 main socket but when BT installed first an ISDN line, then broadband to the study extension they wired it directly into the back of the socket, so removing the plate doesn't disable extensions. However when I had the problem last week I disconnected all telephone appliances and router and connected to the NTE5 main socket using my previous adsl USB modem connected to my laptop. I got the same result for speedtester. Is 5.5db better or worse than 6.2db?

I don't understand.
Where (in terms of rooms) is the NTE5 and where are the extension boxes ?
Which box are you referring to when you say "they wired it directly into the back of the socket" ?

Marginally worse. If the 6.2dB shows during daylight hours and the 5.5dB shows after about 5pm then I would say those numbers are absolutely normal.
Further examination shows I have 2 NTE5 main sockets (removable front lower half), one in the hall and the other in the study. Maybe when the study extension was put in it became the new main socket. Unfortunately it's now behind a heavy wardrobe, which I don't think I'll try moving unless there's another deterioration. I'll keep monitoring the speeds.

My guess would be that the one in the hall is the real master - first connection to outside BT line - & the other one has been wrong connected to the incoming BT circuit rather than the extension connections in the face plate and should be an extension socket not an NTE5.
No idea what that would do for you but it ain't right.

How quickly would BT be able to raise the profile ? - would it be in a matter of minutes via the phone call from Orange ?
Ok, haven't spoke to Orange yet due to the queues... I'm off of college tomorrow so will ring them up then.
Did another test today and got:
Download speed achieved during the test was - 144 Kbps
Your DSL Connection Rate :352 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 250 Kbps

Or are we talking a few hours/days ?
No idea , never had to do it. O CS are never speedy though and your first task is getting them to understand the problem.
