This is my first post and I think this is the appropriate place to post.
I have been with Orange since the Freeserve days and should really get around to changing.
Last night between 11pm-12am my internet went down. By down I mean my router said I had internet connectivity, but I couldn't connect to anything. I figured it may be an issue with Orange so I went to sleep thinking the internet would be fine in the morning. However, I could still get no connection so I hooked up my old Speedtouch modem. It was then I discovered my login name was incorrect. It seems Orange had changed it no longer requiring @fs at the end. So I edited the login name in my router settings which went well at first, but my internet connectivity kept dropping for a few minutes then synced at a higher speed than usual. I am used to a connection of about 1.8mb even though my line should be okay with 4-5mb. Hence why I should be changing from Orange soon. However, I was very interested to see my sync speed go from about 2.4mb (faster than it was before the username change) to 4.1mb when I changed my connection type to PPPoE. I am downloading right now at 420kb - 450kb and my router says it has synced at 4.1mb. If I change my connection type to PPPoA, my download speed does right down to around 200kb and my sync to around 2mb.
The connection seems very stable at 4mb and downloading/using the internet with no issue at all. I have had speed problems before with Orange a long time ago with my speed dropping to about 0.5mb. After many calls I eventually got an enginner out to my home and my speed went to 4-5mb for a few weeks before dropping back down to the 2mb ish i have been having.
Sorry if this seems a little long winded. I am planning on switching ISP soon, but I am baffled as to why my connection is so much faster on PPPoE. I thought PPPoE was supposed to be ever so slightly slower! I was wondering if I was supposed to be using PPPoE all along? I just don't understand why it is faster.
