I've joined this forum because I really need some help
I took my Son's PC to a local PC repair guy just to ask for advice on improving it's performance. no specific problems, just wanted to make it a bit quicker.
Vista Home Premium 32bit AMD 9550 Quad-Core.
His advice was to remove Norton 360 (which I didn't like anyway) because it uses so much resources. Which I let him do, I think he used the Norton Removal Tool, and in it's place he installed Avira AntiVir Personal - Free Edition v.9.0.0.394 & Malwarebytes.
We bought the PC home and now have no Internet connection!
It's a wireless PC using a Speedtouch 121g adapter and Orange Livebox.
When I goto Network & Sharing Centre in the Control Panel it looks like this:
this computer-unidentified network-x-internet
Access: Local Only
Connection: Livebox
Signal Strenghth: Good
So it's connecting to the Livebox, but not the Internet.
I've spent over an hour on the phone to a guy from Orange, he tried tonnes of stuff including a factory reset on the Livebox, but to no avail.
I contacted Norton who basically told me it was nothing to do with them.
If I can't get it going again I'll have to take it back to the fool who broke it, which is a very last resort.
I already have 2 wired connections to the Livebox (that work fine). It was wireless beforehand and didn't have any problems. I have tried connecting with the antivirus enabled and disabled.
I agree; I cannot see why removing Norton should make a difference, but it seems it has. Norton was on the PC when we purchased it.
Yes, I tried re-pairing the device, several times. I tried re-installing the drivers for adapter. I have tried with an ethernet cable, but it won't work wired either.
I contacted Orange again. The problem is that the computer cannot obtain the correct IP address. They have now said that it's an issue with the computer and not them. Maybe I'm on the wrong forum
What would cause the computer to suddenly stop being able to obtain the correct IP address??
When I typed ipconfig/release it brought up the wrong IP address, and when I typed ipconfig/renew it said "an error occured while renewing interface Wireless Network Connection: unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out"
Didn't get to try your last suggestion. A friend of a friend called round and got it going.
Wanted to thank you though, for your help, cheers
And wanted to post what fixed it incase anyone else has similar problems....
We used the Norton Removal Tool, and there were still traces of Norton left, so it seems the repair guy hadn't removed it properly afterall, tut.
Also we changed the security settings on Livebox; to WEP or WPA. I had already tried this but it seems the settings had somehow reverted back, so the combination of this step along with fully removing Norton, did the job.
