I have been a Freeserve/Wanadoo/Orange customer for close on a decade now, and over the years my family and my own internet habits has changed greatly. We have been on the 2MEG broadband package since we got broadband and have never had a problem with it until recently. My son downloads alot, and my daughters also go on sites like YouTube alot. This has meant we have been consistently going over our 4GB limit (which is terrible to begin with). We received a letter from Orange about a year ago saying "You need to cut back on your download, we're capping your speed for now" and for a few months, we did and got normal speed back.
About 3 weeks ago, we received a letter from Orange saying the package is not longer going to be suitable/available to us so they would be upgrading up to 8MEG with unlimited downloads. The letter said this change will be in place within the next month, so it should probably arrive next week.
This morning, we got a letter saying our download speed has risen again and we are getting a permanent cap on our broadband from 6pm-12am.
My real question is, will the cap still be in place when we have the new package despite it being unlimited downloads?
If the letter says a permanent cap, you've got a permanent cap. You've also got a maximum of 5Gb per month during peak times 6pm-12am on an unlimited package.
You've also got the opportunity to cancel without penalty, so you can move to a new provider even if you're within the minimum term contact.
That's IF the letter does say you're permanently capped at peak times.
Orange cap customers, like they did with me, even if you are low usage. I was using less than 1gb per month but yet my connection speed sucked at peak times. 17kb/s is not exactly broadband. Good luck in dealing with their script readers, best bet is if you have an excuse to leave Orange without a cost, get out while you can! The grass is greener out there.
The future's bright, but its certainly not Orange.
