Wanted to host a web cam where could then display live pictures on a website.
Have an Orange live box and wandered if this is possible to do. Looked at an Axis
camera that has a pc built in and wandered if I could assign it a fixed ip address
and attach it to the livebox and then off I go. Guess what I am trying to do is much
the same if you wanted to host a website on your own pc using the live box - has
anyone done anything like this ? Wandered if the stumbling block would be that
would need a fixed ip of the camera and then would need that to be visile on the
internet. Bit new to all of this so any help greatly appreciated.
Its more than possible, I've done it, but its not for the faint hearted, you need to know what you are doing. There are several things to consider, not least of which is signing up to one of the dynamic DNS services so that your router (livebox) can be found as your Orange dynamic IP address changes. Then you configure the livebox to port forward (port 80) to the IP address of your camera, which is ideally static but on the private subnet used by the livebox. I would suggest 192.168.1.250. The camera needs to be configured so that the default gateway (or router) and the DNS point at your livebox (192.168.1.1).
Its a lot easier if you have an understanding of IP addresses and routing.
If you haven't bought a camera yet, might I suggest you look at the Panasonic range ? They are a lot cheaper than AXIS (around 70%) do the same job and are almost the same quality. I've bought several Panasonic BLC-1 and found them to be excellent picture quality and very reliable. You can do static pictures quite easily on an external website without all the trouble of setting up so the internet can see the camera and using the camera's FTP to upload them either on a timed or motion sensitive basis.
This page will give you an idea of the camera's image quality and with 1 minute updates from the camera's FTP.
Live video which the camera's can do is high bandwidth and if your camera became popular would strain an ADSL connection especially as its being used 'back to front' for what it was designed for. The Panasonic can handle the Dynamic DNS itself.
Many thanks for your in depth reply - much appreciated as really want
to have a go.
Which dynamic dns service do you use ?
I like the idea of just a static image every minute so the ftp solution would
be fine.
Is it possible to get the camera to ftp to an external site (where my site is hosted) in order to display the images - would that remove the need to port
forward and do the dynamic dns stuff or am I missing something ?
Thanks for the pointer on the panasonic camera, haven't purchased yet
so will go for the panasonic one you recommend as working to a tight
budget.
Yes, the Panasonic will ftp to an external site and no, if you do that you needn't worry about DDNS or port forwarding. The default network settings for the camera should also be fine. (As standard it gets an IP address from the router and then finds a free IP address at the upper end of that subnet and sets itself as a static ).
Whatever you do, don't be tempted by the ultra cheap stuff on ebay, most of it is complete tat. You won't be disappointed with the Panasonic (been there done that.......)
