Wanadoo technical line (0870 010 2462 costing National rate) has just fixed my connection drop-outs which were occuring every 5 to 60 seconds. I never had a problem with my old connection until it was upgraded for free from 2Mb to 8Mb. Following that upgrade I kept loosing connection. It turns out that the cause of the problem was me having no line-filter on the other telephone in my house. I have two phone sockets in the house - one with the cordless telephone and ADSL Touchspeed 330 modem connected which were both through a single line-filter into the socket, and the second socket with a cheap wired telephone connected direct (no line-filter).
The technical chap, asked me to do the following:
Disconnect the phone (upstairs) which I had connected without a line-filter
Disconnect the wire between the modem and line-filter from both ends (note: the laptop and modem were connected and switched on at the time)
Disconnect the USB modem from my laptop (which was switched on)
Switch off the laptop (power down) and leave for 10 seconds or so
Switch computer back on
Re-connect the wire between the modem and line-filter
Connect the USB modem to the laptop
Wait for ADSL light to settle and stay on (within 1min)
Reconnect to my wanadoo account.
SUCCESS!! Connection speed bubble (that pops up next to the computer icon) was reading 6Mb rather than the usual 1.5Mb and NO MORE DISCONNECTIONS!!
Apparently all the faffing with the leads and switch off/on was to synchronise the modem, BT line, and laptop.
I've now stopped using my USB modem and gone wireless again with my Belkin Router and had zero problems. Also, using www.Rokario.com Bandwidth Monitor I'm getting around 1-2Mb download speeds - now I know this isn't 8Mb but it is much better than the 0.1-0.5Mb I was getting during the limited time my connection was up and running previous to the fix, so I'm not complaining.
I hope my (good) experience with the Wanadoo Help Line helps people.
