Is this a common problem ? - I mean, I wouldn't dare connect under 'no security', and am still hesitant with a WEP connection, but what choice do I have ?
Since the livebox by default won't pair without physically pressing a button on the box, the chances that someone else will get in is pretty remote. Its not unusual that some machines won't connect under the newer security protocols.

Thanks, pluggy.
Well, some good news - I decided to reset the Livebox, and wahey! - both machines that I was trying to connect, have been connected
It seems they're connected via WPA-PSK, which is apparently the default. I would have preferred (the connection) to be on the WPA2-PSK, but I guess it's better than no security or WEP.
Might fiddle around later and see what happens. If in doubt, just reset everything, and start again
