I signed up with Wanadoo broadband over 5 years ago now, paying approx. £15 a month, and have stayed with them ever since.
After taking the speed test, I was told that my download speed was 500kb/s, although when downloading a file from the internet, the download speed averages out at about 30kb/s. I've never seen it get any higher than 60kb/s, but only on rare occasions does it get this high.
I was wondering what might be the cause of this?, as it does get really annoying.
Also, when I signed up, I was told that our broadband speeds would increase by themselves, up to the maximum my area could get. Although when entering my phone number and post code on the Orange website, I was told that my area could receive 1.5mb speeds. Can anyone think of a reason why my speeds would not have increased?
Basically Ornage do not provide a real service and will tell you that your line is as fast as it will go.
Including myself, thousands of people have moved ISP and immediately seen a massive, stable increase in speed.
Won't happen with Orange though.
Before my connection with Orange died completely over 3 years ago when I left they told me I could get 1/2 MB max due to the distance to the exchange.
I left these jokers after I had no connection for 2 weeks solid.
Moved to Idnet and got 3MB immediately.
These are a fantastic little reliable company.
I have my mobile with o2 (now Sky) so as it is even cheaper I tried them.
I now get 4 MB with an attenuation of 46 which is high.
There are actually companies out there who care for customers and both Idnet and o2 (now Sky) do it absolutely brilliantly.
Hi there, I work for Orange and might be able to help.
Please send an email to customer.services@orange.co.uk, including your contact details and I will give you a call to discuss.
In order that your email is forwarded to me quickly, please add "Jonathan Orange Response" in the subject field and also in the first line of your mail.

Onto the o/p question.
Download speeds work like a set of scales but they have rules that govern them. A slight analogy for you: A 1cm cube can be pushed through a square hole that is 1cm or greater in diameter. However, if you push an object through from the other side the cube would have to be squeezed in order to fit through, increasing the time it takes to get from one side of the hole to the other. Think of this like your upload and download rates. If you have your download running at 1000kbps and your upload at 448kbps the 'hole' that data tried to pass through is 1000kbps. Thus if you are uploading something then you are shrinking the capacity to gather new data down, thus resulting in slower download rates and vice versa.
But then comes the fun part. The 'hole' might be 1000kbps but the computer at the other end that you want data off will only allow say 100kbps because their 'hole' is only that big, thus you can only pull off the other computer what their 'hole' allows, thus making you think you have slow download rates.
But then it gets even better. If say 10 computers have 'holes' that are 100kbps and you have a hole that is 1000kbps and you want to gather data off these 10 computers all at once you would (in theory) get the data altogether in the same amount of time it takes you to get one piece of data off one computer. Thus, the wonderful world of file sharing and ISP monthly capacity limits.
You see, according to OFCOM, a broadband connection is classified as any download rate of 500kbps+. But like everything in life, nothing is quite as straightforward as it appears. You see your 1000kbps hole can only theoretically get 1000kbps of data in at one time, but those scales are ever so slightly tipped towards the upload from the moment you switch on your computer. Getting the maximum data transfer that your line is would result in the impossibility of gathering any other data until the first download is slowed down or completed. In essence you completely 'throttle' your connection and result in a disconnection or a temporary point of connection freeze. Try forcing an ice cube down a plughole, it has to melt or break before falling through. Thus the small pieces that break off are the file segments of the data you want, but you can't have it all at once unless the ice cube is small. The bigger the cube; the longer it takes.
I know it is like an essay, but hope it lets you understand it a bit better
And refrain from listening to muppets who say the ISP control your speeds, they don't. They only control up to the minimum your line needs to be for a stable connection, the rest is left to computers and engineers to decide what you get at a specific time. Oh and other users and quality of line, and distance, and network type, and modem, and pc and...i'll stop jabbering now

Why dont you stop giving out sarcastic remarks on other posters you comments look ridiculous, whilst your posts can be helpful your silly asides are not, people can post what they like, if you don't like it ignore it.

So whilst your brothers in arms may slate and ridicule a company without actual factual based proof of what they say is true i am told to shut up for defending them? Please, don't contradict yourself. As you so eloquently put it "if you don't like it, ignore it."
Do unto others as others do unto you. You slander a company with nothing more than slanderous opinions based on your poor experience and suddenly they are the worst thing since broadband began. Grow up and look at the bigger picture of what your poisonous tongues will do. Instead of telling every person on here to leave Orange maybe help them with actual technical advice.
I for one have no issue with their Indian call centres because i know how they are taught to handle customers. I know the industry and the company more than you ever will and thus completely rational with my advice of what to say and do.
I will feel so warm inside when they day comes that broadband is operated by a monopoly, and then we shall see how many turn around and say "if only i hadn't said that." It's people who throw insults, tell everyone to boycott everything and shout and scream that ruin industries. Sounds like 1970's Britain repeating itself.
Alas, if you don't like me or my comments, then ignore me, stop pretending you are someone who speaks for every single person because you are behind a screen and a keyboard with 1500+ posts of a forum.

Sorry, but I agree with liquid. I am not a frequent visitor here but when I do I find nearly every interesting thread here marred by cosmicdance, who posts irrelevant comments that do not actually address the point in question (just like Orange's Indian call centre LOL).
He also even often mocks the Orange Rep who offers to try and help the OP's problem.
It reads as if he still harbours a grudge against Orange from years back.

I was referring to flaming other posters not what's said about Orange (who cares i'm sure they don't lol) seems now liquid is taking to flaming me lol,
