Can anyone help? This is quite complicated and has defeated me. Will explain as clearly as I can.
Trying to connect wirelessly to Livebox, running OS X 10.4.11. I'm using an Edimax USB wireless adapter.
I managed to install the wireless adapter and to pair it to the Livebox uing the Ralink driver software that came with the adapter. I'm pretty sure that the computer is connected wirlessly to the Livebox because:
1. The Ralink software says it is connected. When I change settings on the Livebox it disconnects and reconnects.
2. On the Livebox configuration 'System Information' it reports two devices connected to the network, one of which is the MAC address reported by the wifi adapter software. (The other is a separate laptop whichworks fine).
So I'm pretty sure the wifi adapter and the Livebox are connected to each other. So why can't I get on the internet?
Here's what I have on the Network section of System Preferences on the MAC:
On 'Network Status' it says "Ethernet Adapter (en1) is currently active and has the IP address 192.168.1.2. You are connected to the internet via Ethernet Adaptor (en1)."
On 'Network Port Configurations' I have 'Ethernet Adapter (en1)' at the top and 'Built-in Ethernet' second on the list (this works fine if I put it at the top, and that way I can get on the internet).
On the Network settings for the wireless adapter itself I have:
Can you connect to http://192.168.1.1 ? If not then you're not connected to the livebox. There are frequently incompatibility problems with wireless gear, have you tried turning off the WEP/WPA encryption on the livebox and seeing if it will connect without the security ?. Or just switching it to WEP only ?. Not ideal but it does give some clues as to what might be the problem.
Thanks for your help. Unfortunately it didn't fix it. I tried WEP only, WAP only and security off completely but it made no difference. Here are the settings I'l=ve got in the wireless adapter software. Can anyone spot anything wrong?
Netwrok Type: Infrastructure
Authentication Type: Open
Encryption Type: WEP
Key#1: Hexadecimal: [my WEP key, which I've checked and re-checked
]
Your details say the IP address is set manually, its a compatible IP address and the router is set properly. But it doesn't mention DNS. Does HTTP://192.168.1.1 connect to the livebox configuration ?. That doesn't depend on DNS. The internet as a whole won't work without the correct DNS settings (same as the router is normal).
What happens if you the IP settings set it to DHCP assigned ? If you don't get a 192.168.1 address with that it further suggests you don't have a connection despite what your adapter software says.
If I set the IP address to DHCP (rather than manual) it changes to 169.254.156.7
So it sounds like I'm not actually connected to the Livebox at all. I would understand that if it was just the wireless software that was wrongly reporting the connection, but the Liverbox itself reports 2 devices connected wirelessly, one of which seems (from the MAC address) to be the one that isn't working. Odd
Thanks for your help eveyone. Partly my fault as it turned out, but I've learnt something too.
When it wouldn't resolve 192.168.1.1 earlier that was my fault - has disabled the wireless adapter without realising.
Once I'd got that back I could get to the livebox menu but still not onto the net. Putting the Livebox's IP address into the DNS box sorted that out. Thanks everyone for your help!
