Well, we got a letter about abusing the fair use policy a while back, nothing has changed, but I guess.. I haven't really helped my cause. They capped my connection from 6pm to 12am, and said if I download anything between those times, they'll keep my connection capped. Well, they've made that impossible to do, as the speeds at those times are way too slow, so what's the point in saying that? My Mum called them up a few months ago asking when we could get our speeds back, and they were complaining that I was still downloading too much, and it was only THEN, after being with them since Wanadoo, that we found out we only get 40gb a month usage. I was under the impression we were unlimited, so they us we'd downloaded 72gb in 21 days, which I guess is a little bad, but not if we both thought we were on unlimited.
So, my line is still capped and nothings changed. I keep getting disconnected recently, whether that's because I have been upgrading operating systems a lot recently, I don't know, but it's getting annoying. Not to mention I cannot for the life of me get my PS3 to work wirelessly with my livebox, I have to use a wired connection.
I'm just not sure what to do. I want to move over to Sky internet, since we've got our phone and tv with them also, so we'd get a nice deal. My Mum spoke to someone from Sky in the mall not long ago, and they said they have no fair use policy, because it's illegal? Meaning unlimited downloads without being capped, I guess? I really want to change now, but my Mum says she wants to wait a while for Sky's 16mb connection to be available in our area, as it will be cheaper, or something.. but I'm not sure how much longer I can take with Orange. They've also brought into action that we have to pay for the MAC code now, so that's a pain also.
Cheap bandwidth costs an ISP around 70p a Gigabyte under ideal circumstances (Price up a big leased line and do the sums if you don't believe me). 'Unlimited' is a marketing 'lie' which is put out to sell broadband connections (Implying there is a limit suggests big brother tactics and is a real marketing no-no). They work on a lot of people buying Broadband and not eating much bandwidth to make money. So they resort to vague fair use policies to try and keep a cap on heavy users who are losing them a lot of money. (40 Gb at 70p is the better part of £30, and thats before they start buying and maintaining Servers, call centres etc etc etc). The more money they take off you per month for your connection, the more tolerant they are of heavy use. But if they want too much money, people leave and go elsewhere.
Devil, Deep blue sea..........
PS. We have 3 computers here, one of them used by a teenager with a youtube habit. We get through around 11Gb a month.
