Please help. Have had Orange Broadband for 18 months. I live in the Weymouth area. Connection with outlook express has got slower in an irregular way. Appears worse at weekends. I connect only when I wish to use the internet or receive/send e-mail. Is this bad policy? I have BULLGUARD installed. Could its reception of its updates be affecting my speed?
Typically. it can take 5 minutes or so at bad times to connect. Once connected, speed is better, especially within web-sites.
Could something be clogging up my system, that needs getting rid of?
Could be spam thats not being downloaded and clogging up your account on Orange's servers or the spam filter on bullguard for those which are being downloaded.
Log into your e-mail account on the web from the Orange Home page and see how much spam is on the servers and check the spam settings there.
If you are using only 1 email address on your account you could set Outlook express to log into your account by omitting the @ and proceedings details from your authentication ie name2.orangehome.co.uk rather than name1@name2.orangehome.co.uk. This could mean you download more spam though as it picks up mail not send to your regular address, but should mean that your account gets clogged up less.
You could try turning off the spam filter on bullguard to see if this makes a difference or not.
It could be as you suggest that everything is trying to connect at the same time and slowing it down. Though with modern PC's and healthy broadband connections, this should be less of a problem.
