If you've read any of Elhana's post you'll have been given the answer. But it's taken me a couple of days to sort this lot out.
The problem was with channel number. Started with 1 then 6 (I used to use 6) and then tried 7 tonight and everythings started to work. Bugger.
If you have intermiitent problems this is definately the fix.

PS. a possibly useful tool is Network Stumber which will tell you what your signal is like (and confirm SSID name and channel number). Its free and when you've got a good channel you'll get a nice high and consistent green signal.
