Sometimes the box will go for days without the connection dropping (checked through looking at the 'Configure the Livebox' properties.
However, for a few days the connection will drop for a few minutes every few hours; it's happened twice this evening.
The livebox is connected to the main phone socket so as to cut down this kind of thing.
However, noticed this evening when it did it I was on the phone and it sounded like someone was picking up one of the other phones in the house and putting it down again (they weren't!) and there was a 'bleep' and the livebox was flashing.
So is it an Orange / Livebox problem which could be solved by moving to another provider (I am not in contract to Orange). However, I am wary of moving as it may just get worse.
Thing is it often stays connected for a couple of weeks before going through this cycle of connecting / disconnecting for a few days.
There have been thousands of people post on here, including myself, who leave Orange and immediately get a fast connection with their new ISP.
Orange simply cannot provide a stable connection.
First thing is first...ensure what kind of disconnection you are suffering.
Dropping connections can be related to the connection between PC and modem or modem and internet.
When the connection drops does the @ light flash? If it doesn't ensure you are still connected to the livebox, you can do this by pinging it through CMD (type the command ping 192.168.1.1). If you have packet loss make sure you have no silly firewalls on like Norton or McAfee. Windows firewall rarely causes problems.
You'll tend to see a change in icons at the bottom right of windows if the wired / wireless connections drop, look for a red cross through the icon that represents what kind of connection you are using. You'll also see a popup saying something along the lines of "you have been disconnected from livebox-XXXX."
If you see a flashing @ light then ensure you are on the master socket, and you haven't changed any phones, filters or ADSL equipment recently. Using splitters, non-BT extensions or incompatible phones causes more issues than you'd think with broadband.
However, if you are hearing a strange dial tone, as though someone is picking up a receiver and you've made no changes, the livebox could actually be faulty. The only time a human should hear a router communicating with a line is when it is synchronising (usually if you are on a phone and you reset the router that is on the same connection as your phone).
Change your filters, test a new RJ11 if you have one, make sure you try the line with no devices, just the router and then just the phone, 1 of them is likely to be at fault if it isn't an issue with attenuation / faulty line.
It is definitely the livebox disconnecting. All the lights flash and I am on the master socket.
I do hear a strange dial tone when it disconnects / connects. I have checked the connections and it seems OK. However, since I reported it it hasn't disconnected for getting on for two days now!!!
I will try a new RJ11 if it happens again along with a few other things I've thought of.
I have got two Sky boxes connected to my phone line (correctly) They dial out every now and then? Could that be a potential problem?
Disconnect the Sky boxes and see is the easy answer. I disconnected mine just after the engineer left from fitting it and it hasn't been connected since (several years ago). Its just a revenue generator for Sky, it doesn't need it to function - unless you're into on-line voting or something.

Sadly with Sky multiroom the boxes do need to be connected so the box can check that the box isn't being used elsewhere (eg in someone elses home!)
