Been a customer of Freeserve since 2001, then Wanadoo then unfortunately we inherited Orange. We never had any problems until Orange came along and since they have our speeds have been crap/ We're paying 17.99 per month for up to 8mb but we only get 750kbps or less. We are 1 mile from the exchange (WSAYR)and it says we should get up to 4.5mb speeds on the line, we've never had anywhere near that!
On the phone last week Orange said they can reduce our package to up to 2mb for 9.99 per month (not sure on download limit) but to be honest i'm fed up with it and don't want to be tied to them for another 18mths.
For the last week we have been getting disconnected like a yoyo, on for a few minutes then off again, all night long. Do you think our line is capped, what are the suggestions? I was with BT Broadband years ago and found them excellent and am tempted to go back, but again scared incase the speeds are the same as on Orange now.
Well Orange said my problems are probably not down to anything on the line and refused to do a line test as they said it would be something wrong with my router because we are getting internet sometimes even though it disconnects frequently. They said they could give me new settings for my Belkin router but I refused for the time being as i've had the same router settings for 2 years and they have never had a problem.
Come to think of it and after reading posts on this forum our problems with Orange kinda started after they "upgraded" us to 8mb a year or so ago.
We are now using 2 laptops (not always at the same time) wirelessly on this line but should that really affect the speeds and connectivity as much as we are experiencing now! I'm probably about to leave Orange but am anxious about signing a contract with a new provider also.
I find this odd, this is usually only enabled on problem lines as a type of error correction, to try to increase stability and to try to reduce disconnections. On a 'normal' line I would not expect to see this as it has the drawback of increasing latency.
I also find it odd that your attenuation is so high only being a mile from the exchange. Such a high figure would suggest a greater loss in the ADSL signal usually experienced by living further from the exchange.
Your connection speed is also roughly only equivalent to 1.4 mb when you say your line should support 4.5 mb.
I find all this unusual for a line with no faults. I don't think it would be unreasonable for them to run a line test given the circumstances.
Being upgraded to 8 mb usually means being llu'd meaning you are switched to Orange run equipment. This can affect your line speeds as you are now receiving a different service.
Have you still got your livebox to try, to definitely rule out a problem with your Belkin router to Orange?
I have only just been upgraded to 8mb and my Belkin Router has stopped connecting to the internet.
They sent me a Livebox which I tried last night and I can connect using that (although it's a lot slower than when I was using the Belkin Router and on the BT Network!)
Is there an easy way to get my Belkin Router working again? Do I just need to change some settings?

PS: We are in a house that seems to have loads of telephone cables running all around and we are not sure which is the master socket! The previous owner also had a wired network installed and there are ethernet cables coming out of the floorboards in two rooms. Could any of this be affecting the speed?
Well i have been testing my speeds for over a week now and have not had even close to 1MB downloads yet. I am ready to leave Orange now as I've had enough. My partner gets faster speeds on 3G on his Iphone!
Question now is how do i know what a good isp is? and how do i know what speeds i'm going to get when i do sign up? do they have a cancellation period if i don't receive decent speeds? Thanks

You generally get better results from the master socket. The condition & length of wiring can make a big difference, extensions are not recommended. Also wiring can act as an antenna and pick up interference decreasing your obtainable speed. Filters also need to be correctly installed to all equipment connected to the line.
Have you tried using your livebox instead? for comparison.

As to if you will get higher speeds, depends on what is causing the current problem. If it is down to your setup or a line fault, then it is likely to be the same. If it is down to Orange equipment or traffic management or contention or capping then there is a possibility it could improve.
Some ISP's will tell you the theoretical best speed for your line before you sign up. Some offer monthly contracts. It is best to shop around for your needs.
If you are unlikely to get better speeds on your line it may be worth considering a fibre optic connection instead.
Thanks for your reply Thomas. We only have a belkin router as we never got a livebox seeing as we were original customers of freeserve. We used to have a speedtouch but we don't even have that anymore to try. Orange refuse to check our line and say they will give us settings for our modem/router but our settings have been the same for years and it used to give us good speeds so i don't see how changing that will help.
Our exhange did go LLU about the time we were offered the "upgrade" to 8mb and it seems like a lot of folk on this forum our speeds decreased with this!
We're not sure which is our master socket as there are so many telephone cables about the house and about 6 different sockets in various rooms. I'm worried that if i start pulling up extensions that i will end up ripping out the wrong line and get cut off altogether! lol
Unfortunately we dont get fibre optic cable in this area or i'd be signed up in a shot! Anyway i'll go read that forum post about isp now. Thanks again
I thought they would have supplied the livebox when they upgraded you. I assumed they did this, with the price you are paying. This also means you dont have use of the 2nd line. So not only are you suffering from a poor connection.
Can you identify your master socket using the following?
