HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can't connect my pc to my livebox. I have recently tried to connect a 2nd pc to my LB both wired and wire free with no success. My 1st PC connects both wired and wire free. I have tried the usual ticky box stuff, but the Ip address is always 169..... and not 192..... like on the first pc. What could it be?
It should be similar to your first pc with only the last digits varying.
Usually the default is 192.168.1.x. All devices on your network should have this starting address.
The 169.254.x.x gets set by Windows when it is looking for a DHCP server and cant access it.
This may suggest the DHCP server is turned off on your livebox and your first PC has a static address. If this is the case, there are two options. Either turn on the DHCP server on your livebox or manually assign a static IP address to your 2nd PC (remembering that the livebox is usually assigned 192.168.1.1).
To see if it is turned on:
Type 192.168.1.1 in your Internet Browser on your first PC.
Login using admin as the username and admin as the password.
Click Configuration.
Click Advanced.
Click Network.
You will see something similar to:
Enable DHCP server (tick in the box or not)
LAN IP address: 192.168.1.1
Broadcast LAN IP address: 192.168.1.255
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
DHCP start address: 192.168.1.9
DHCP server end address:192.168.1.200
The first line tells you if it is on or off and allows you to change it.
If you are going to leave it off and assign a static address to your 2nd pc, it needs to be outside the range of the DHCP start address and DHCP server end address.
