My internet access went on the blink on 25 April, the day before I went on holiday for 2 weeks. Returning on 10 May, I was horrified to find it was stiil the same. Symptoms:
1. Most sites timed out.
2. A few sites worked as normal
3. Google searches always worked but most hyperlinks thrown up by Google didn't. Fortunately this site's did or I would not be writing this.
4. Emails could be received but could not always be sent.
I connect via a Belkin ADSL modem+wireless router. I have 3 pcs connected and all show identical symptoms.
After much playing with MTU settings, etc, etc, I changed my connection setting on the modem to PPPoE from PPPoA - the setting advised by Orange and the one I have used for several years. My internet access now works perfectly. It would appear that my modem doesn't always get a connection everytime it's restarted, whereas with PPPoA it always does. However, when it does connect it works properly.
I am connected to the Wimbledon exchange with a notional 8 Mb/s rate, typically getting 5.3 Mb/s down and 288 Kb/s up.
Can anybody explain why this change has apparently fixed my problem - or can I expect more?
i don't know but it has also just fixed my identical problem using a netgear dg814 which has worked fine for the last 2 years
i had occasional evenings when i was unable to get online at all, and then as of around 20th May I was only able to access certain sites - google and one or two other obscure ones
orange say there is a problem on the line but cannot say what exactly and don't seem to know when or how to fix it?
they said they fixed it last week and my connection went from 8 to 2 Mg
thanks to your suggestion it is now up and running again but i think i'm going to switch provider
north west london
will

It's likely the LLU hardware can handle both PPPoA and PPPoE but Orange simply recommend oA as thats the default for non-LLU and so it stays consistant. It's also likely the PPPoE side has a slightly different configuration in comparison.
How do you change the connection setting on the Belkin ADSL modem to PPPoE from PPPoA?
The modem has a web-based graphical user interface. The address is specified in the installation instructions as 192.168.2.1. Typing this into IE's address bar on a computer connected to the modem - either by ethernet or wireless - will bring up the GUI. Choose 'Connection Type' from the menu and the rest is obvious.
Thank you to MikeT and Will for taking the trouble to post their experiences. I've just got my DG814 to work in a newly-LLU'd environment by switching to PPPoE. It worked fine pre-LLU using PPPoA. It rather seems that Orange don't entirely understand the effect of their LLU changes. I have encouraged them to look into this more thoroughly to save other customers the hours of grief I've just experienced. Here's hoping!
I changed from BT a week or 2 ago and today, my connection ceased to work.
OK I thought, Orange must have done the change. No livebox received yet, but no worries, I'll put the user and pass into the TP-Link TD-W8920G router.
It worked fine for an hour or so then, same problems as noted above.
Changed to PPPoE and bingo, back on again.
I'm set up like this:
VPI: 0
VCI: 38
UBR without PCR (see below *1)
QoS disabled (see below *2)
PPPoE (see below *3)
LLC/SNAP-BRIDGING or VC/MUX (either seem ok)
PPPoE service name: test
Authentication method: AUTO
MTU 1492
IGMP Multicast enabled (tickbox)
WAN service enabled (tickbox)
Enable 802.1q disabled (tickbox)
Options I haven't played around with include:
*1 - UBR with PCR, CBR, Non Realtime VBR, Realtime VBR
*2 - QoS enabled
*3 - IP over ATM (IPoA), MAC Encapsulation Routing (MER), Bridging
I called Orange tech support who confirmed I was now on their LLU system at the exchange. They did say that there is a fault showing on the line, but of course they're not willing to really troubleshoot anything until I'm using their livebox router. They can't support every man dog and beast router out there, which I guess I understand.
Although PPPoE seems to have gotten things mostly up and running, I have a couple of errors showing up in the routers diagnostic page:
Test ATM OAM F5 segment ping: FAIL
Ping default gateway: FAIL
Ping primary Domain Name Server: FAIL
There is a button marked "Test with OAM F4". If I press it, I get:
Test ATM OAM F5 segment ping: F4/F5 FAIL
Test ATM OAM F5 end-to-end ping: F4 FAIL
Ping default gateway: FAIL
Ping primary Domain Name Server: FAIL
It might be worth noting that these errors were pre-existing from my days on BT... If I change back to PPPoA and run the diagnostics, I get similar results:
Test ATM OAM F5 segment ping: FAIL
Ping primary Domain Name Server: FAIL
There is a button marked "Test with OAM F4". If I press it, I get:
Test ATM OAM F5 segment ping: F4/F5 FAIL
Test ATM OAM F5 end-to-end ping: F4 FAIL
Ping primary Domain Name Server: FAIL
These are the same errors I was getting pre-Orange.
I don't know if this info helps shed any light for anyone; if there's anyone out there who knows what an F4 / F5 FAIL is, I'd be very interested to hear.
But for now, despite the errors, the connection does seem to operate satisfactorily. I'm getting 605 Kbps down & 5003 Kbps up, the expected max for my exchange was stated to be 5meg.
My router allows me to override the DNS servers automatically assigned by the ISP. If instead of Orange's DNS servers, I specify OpenDNS DNS servers:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
..then the 'Ping primary Domain Name Server' fail condition clears.
I have the following configurable options, none of which I understand. I don't know if changing any of these would help:
The default gateway is currently showing as 91.109.0.1 under autoconfiguration, but it's manually configurable under 'Routing' as either an IP address, or by selecting a configured interface already in the router. I tried selecting the interface rather than IP, that didn't help though.
I have not been able to clear the 'Ping default gateway' error for long, although selecting 'SRA Enable' briefly appeared to give me a different default gateway of 91.110.64.1 - whereupon the 'Ping default gateway' error vanished for the duration of one boot.
Attempted to make 91.110.64.1 permanent as the default gateway in the router config, however this just resulted in causing even the OpenDNS DNS servers to fail ping tests.
