As their isn't really a place for this it goes here..
So my contract ends in February. I've already priced up another ISP despite having no issues with Orange in the 18 months...
I just want to clarify what i need to do to switch.. I know it's ring Orange and ask for the MAC code.. Contact my new ISP and give them the MAC.. This then becomes the 30 day notice for Orange... Yes?
I've read here i will have to pay for the 30 days to Orange..
Can i cancel the contract a month early and avoid paying the "extra" month and just pay off the remainder of my contract? Which would only be the one month.
30 days starts from when the MAC is initiated by the gaining ISP.
Good thinking on the idea to treat the 30 day notice as the last month of the contract. Legally/contractually, I can't see anything wrong in that, you would have complied with the 18 month term of the contract and complied with the 30 days notice requirement.....it will be difficult to time the process exactly although you can specify to the gaining ISP the precise date when you want to migrate.
Fortunately I didn't have to comply with the 30 days notice because Orange had given me 2 free months and I left them during the first month.

If you don't migrate, but cancel your account instead, then there will be an £18.50 fee charged to your account, as per the recent update to the Terms and Conditions:-
Quote:
21.4 If you terminate your Agreement and do not request and use a MAC Code we reserve the right to make a Charge which you agree to pay. This Charge will be to cover the cancellation fee that we must pay BT for disconnecting customers in this way. The amount of the Charge can be found at http://www.orange.co.uk/time/d...rservices. Such a Charge will not be payable by you if you Move and have subscribed to our Service(s) at your New Home or if we are unable to provide the Service(s) at your New Home

Orange will probably try desperately to retain you as a customer and lock you into another 18 month contract.
I would strongly advise continuing to leave though as you have been lucky indeed not to have problems.
There are many real ISP s out there who actually serve customers well, including o2 (now Sky) and Idnet, from my own experience.
Cheers for the advice... I've already decided to put everything together with Sky as it's cheaper as i've just bought a new 48' HD TV, Sky HD is now a must for the Rugby on Sky Sports...
(Guna have eyes like him after a month ->> )
I think i have been extremely lucky to have no problems with Orange... From day 1 they sent the router within a few days... And i've only had maybe a total of 4 nights downtime due to PPP Server issues in the entire 17 months.. *touch wood my last month isn't a complete shambles*..
I was with Freeserve / Wanadoo / Orange for a number of years (until November 2008) and saw their levels of technical and administrative service decline drastically over that time. Whoever you move to can't be any worse. I went to o2 (now Sky) and it was like a breath of fresh air.
I was even happy to let Orange over-charge me by £7.00 (by their own admission) for the final payment just so that I didn't have to deal with them again. It seemed like a price worth paying, and the thought of having to speak with them again was just too awful. Also, I wanted to remember my last conversation with Orange being one where they attempted to retain my business by groveling and making promises that I know they were unable to keep.
Anyone who runs a company in the manner in which Orange does deserves to go out of business. I hope that they do so soon.
To be fair to Orange Broadband they get nothing but praise from me.. They have been a perfectly acceptable ISP with barely any downtime at all other than the above mentioned PPP a few months back which seems to have vanished. And the odd Livebox update... When the contract started back in August 07 i had the router within 3 days... And was away and on the internet within 4 or 5.. Plain sailing since.
I just can't understand how it can go wrong for such a large number of people..
