Hi all, just purchased my 40gb ps3 the other day. I have got Orange broadband at home its the free internet package at the moment. My pc is down stairs and i want to play upstairs. I know i need a wireless router. was wondering if someone can answer the following questions:
1) can anyone recomend a good but reasonable router
2) could somebody supply a idiots guide of how to install it all from start to finish! i have look around website but its all dutch to me!
As long as you get an 802.11g compliant adsl router then it should be fine, practically every wireless router supports this standard or better. Also as long as it's a UK one then you just follow it's instructions to log into it, put your username and password in along with any other required settings it requires that should be on the Orange settings link at the top of the page.
You'll want to turn on wireless security and note down the key used, then just tell the PS3 to scan for networks (never done it but I assume it can scan) select yours enter the key as needed and it should connect. If you're recommended to mask the SSID, hide it or make it invisible you can but then you'll have to tell the PS3 to specifically connect to that.
The router is up to you, generally it's best to stay away from the really cheap ones but you don't really need to spend silly money on one unless you want to start running several systems sharing files and streaming media (especially HD stufff) around. Most people don't usually need the high end features.

Sorry this is the one I used:
Okay, this is how to set up your Playstation 3 for online play, without setting your firewall security to 'low'.
First of all, go to http://configuration.adsl and log in. (Default username is admin and password is admin - consider changing it if you haven't.) Click 'Configuration', 'Advanced', 'Wireless'. Here, take note of the Livebox name: Like Orange - 0000 or WANADOO-0000 and change the security to 'WEP security only'. (This will be changed back once the livebox is paired). Also, changed the wireless pairing time to '--' (unlimited). Again, you can change with back once the Livebox is paired with the PS3. Click Submit.
Then, go to 'Security', 'Wireless Connection'. Note down your WEP secturity key. 26 characters long, eg: 0123456789ABCDEF1234567
Go to your PS3 Cross Media Bar (XMB), go to settings, network settings, Internet Connection Settings. Say yes when it says you will be disconnected (may not appear if connecting first time).
Select wireless.
Select scan.
A list of wireless networks should appear. Select the one with the SSID of your Livebox name (ORANGE-0000, etc.) and the security should be WEP. Signal strength should be at least 30% for a continuous connection. If not, move the Livebox closer to the PS3 or open a few doors.
Select this wireless network.
Check the SSID. and continue.
In WLAN Security Setting, select WEP.
Type in the 26 character WEP key. (Use the L2 button to shift to the numbers faster)
Continue and select 'Easy'.
Test connection should then work.
Also remembered to press button one on the back of the "livebox" this puts it in pairing mode so you can then connect to it......
This should sort you out mate!
Let us know how you get on!
Dave.

cheers for that mate, but what's that address (configuration.adsl) all about as screen just comes up blank ? also, i don't have a livebox, mine is just a normal wireless router, made by Zoom, model = X6.
Sorry mate, I’m not at all technical.
I’d never even gamed on-line til this summer - took a chance on Orange and just followed the instructions above to get on-line.
As you’re with Orange why not badger them for a Livebox? I’ve found it OK to be honest and not really had too many problems. It’s well worth it cos on-line gaming is a lot of fun. Sorry I can’t be of more help, if you ever get sorted I’ll give you a game on Call of Duty 4 sometime!
all sorted finally, got a livebox off ebay and it works just fine after a few initial teething problems. got call of duty 4 today as well, so feel free to add me - username is SloughBlues.
Just got a PS3 and im trying to connect via wireless. I have a livebox and have followed the above instructions but i keep getting the message "Exchanging keys timed out" When i connect with no security it connects, but wih WEP or WPA i gt the same message.
after entering the WEP key it says "checking network configuration please wait", I then have a IP Address Setting Menu, I choose Manual, then it gives me a menu with IP Address 0.0.0.0, Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0, Default Router 0.0.0.0, Primary DNS 0.0.0.0, Secondary DNS 0.0.0.0
I change the IP Address to the one i got from the Livebox 192.168.1.132
After that I'm lost.......the options are to edit, or cancel or I can go back to previous options.
Where do I go from here, do I need to change any Default Router or Primary/Secondary DNS settings??
