Since I swapped ISP to Orange, I have noticed while playing an online game (Battlefield 2) that my ping is fluctuating really bad.
I play mainly on a USA server and attain a ping of 126 but this is now rocketing to 400+ at various times. I switch off other programs such as antivirus etc and make sure no Windows updates are downloading.
I donate to this server financially so don't want to join one closer to home!
I have joined other servers and get the same problem.
My son has the same problem on his PC in the same house which I suggest rules out my newly built PC.
This has only happened since switching to Orange and nothing has been altered.
We recently had a BT engineer check out the line and resulted in no faults.
Are there any settings that I can adjust to correct the fluctuating ping?
Thanks for any replies.?
I wasn't sure of displaying certain data so blocked it out !!!

I notice over users of the forum have also complained about ping latency problems.
Today (Sunday 23rd November) I have had high ping problems all day and been unable to join my USA friends on the game that I play.
Maybe a petty debate but I don't see why I should be suffering.
Thats the info I was looking for. You are right, for safety it is a good idea not to post your WAN IP address.

Type: Interleave
This explains the problem with your ping times. A normal connection should read "fast".
Interleave is usually only enabled on problem lines to try to increase stability on the line and reduce disconnections. Unfortunately it has an adverse effect on ping times.
I don't understand as your attenuation is not bad, you should be able to achieve decent download speeds. Though your noise margin seams a little higher than normal, which can decrease download speeds slightly.
Have you had problems with your line before? You say BT found no faults recently. In which case you may want to speak to Orange customer services, see if they can switch the connection mode to fast and see what your connection is like then.
There is also the possibility of them reducing your target noise margin to increase download speed, if there are no problems with the line.
Also having the livebox plugged into your master socket with correctly installed filters will usually produce better results and there are some wiring tweaks for the technically minded, aimed at improving your connection.
Thanks for your reply, I appreciate it.
Because this problem happens while playing an online game, (mainly on USA based servers), the ping DOES settle down later in the evening. Could this be because of all the European 'traffic' that are playing on the same servers?
Even if it is that, it never happened with my previous ISP (Force9/PlusNet)!
With them I was getting poor download speeds, actually went down to 1.2 mb when paying for upto 8mb. They couldn't/wouldn't sort it out so we moved to Orange because of friends close by acheiving good speeds, but when ours were poor again, Orange sent out the engineer. He sent back his report and we now get 4.8mb quite regularly.
The interleave setting will be increasing your ping latency .
It sounds like it may have been turned on at some point to try to increase the stability of your line. It is a type of error correction which unfortunately has the side effect of increasing your ping times.
It could be you a suffering from both problems (server load and in the interleave setting) which makes the effects more noticeable
If there are no faults on a line, you really don't need the interleave setting.
I was playing my online game in the afternoon today with no issues. Then at approx. 17:15 it was like a switch had been activated and sure enough the ping just went ballistic again.
The other possibility is something is causing interference on your line at these times causing more lost packets and coupled with the interlace setting on your line is causing noticeable ping lags.
Though BT says there are no problems with your line.
You could ask Orange to change your line to fast say for a week and see what the effects are.
OK, thanks for that and I will probably try if the problem persists within the week.
I will report back in due course.
Thanks once again for everyone's input.
This almost certainly seems to be related to something that Orange has recently implemented or changed for certain people regarding throttling at peak times or data usage.
I am having the exact same problem. As soon as 5pm hits, the packet loss jumps up like crazy and my ping goes Sky high.. but my download and upload speeds stay the same. I can download a file from my work servers at full speed, browsing is perfect, but trying to play games online via a 360 or PS3 or streaming live video is absolutely impossible or not worth it because of lag and interruptions while the speed fluctuates because it is being throttled.
My connection has been perfect for 2 years. Two weeks ago Orange sent me an e-mail saying that the changes to my line they e-mailed me about recently (they didn't) have been made and I can now receive 6.5MB speed (previous was 4.5). The very next night, the problems with packet loss and high ping started. There is absolutely no way it's a problem at my end, as I know all the ins and outs as part of my job.
I sent Orange a huge long e-mail explaining the whole situation and then chased it up by telephone advising that I needed a clear exact answer and resolution within 5 days or i'd be switching. Someone from the escalation team actually called me this morning and said they are working to find out the problem and resolution - I mentioned this site and said that over the last few days a number of people had come on here with very similar problems that seem to be related to the same issue... his answer was that there have indeed been similar reports that he knows about.
