After many years with Orange, I am fed up with unreliable connections and want to cancel my contract.
But I do find the Liveprinter function very useful (not having to have a PC switched on just to print from another PC).
Please can I have forum members suggestions of what hardware I could buy which would replicate the Liveprinter function, if I use another ISPs router?
TIA.
Hi Tia..
This can be done with any router with a USB port.
I will instruct how to connect a printer so you can bookmark this page and come back to it when you need it..
Step 1
Make sure your internet is up & running e.t.c... Plug your printers USB into the Router & plug in the printer.. [ Bit of a no brainer.. ]
Step2
If your laptop is running Vista. Go to Start> Control Panel> Printer>
This will bring up a Printers window.. Click Add a Printer> This will bring up a wizard window with two options.. One is Add a network, wireless or bluetooth printer.. Pick that one.. It will say searching for printer.. But won't find one.. So click " The printer i want isn't listed "
Then make sure " Add a printer using a TCP/IP address is checked and click next. In the Device Type section.. Make sure it's TCP/IP. In the Hostname or IP box.. You type your Routers IP address.. [ This can be found by going to Command Prompt and typing " ipconfig "
In the port name.. Type the name you want to give your printer..
Leave the box below unchecked..
Wait for the Wizard to detect your IP port.. When it's done this you will see a page with " Additional Port Info Required "
In Device Type = Standard drop down box.. Go down to " Print Server " And select it.. It will then ask for drivers.. Click "Have Disk Insert the disk that came with your printer.. Insert that.. Wait for it to finish.. Then click print test page..
If you get stuck anywhere.. Let me know..
But remember.. Any Router with a USB port..
If you can't find one.. There are USB to Ethernet adapters out there..
Oh... And i you're running XP.. You do exactly the same thing.. lmao
For anybody interested who came across this thread, as an alternative to Liveprinter on the Livebox, I have found the Belkin USB Hub to be an excellent product. It plugs into an ethernet socket on any router and effectively shares any USB peripheral plugged into it, e.g. printer, thumbdrive, USB HDD etc. When you want to print, the device will automatically connect your PC to the printer and disconnect after printing, meaning any LAN PC can access the printer.
