I am glad that such a forum exists because I got really confused.
I am living in Spain and ordered Orange adsl about Three weeks ago. The contract also says that Orange takes over the line from Telefonica, which is kind of the Spanish BT.
Two days ago, I received my livebox from Orange, but I still have to sign the contract which is going to be sent to me next week or so. After that, Orange will take over the line.
I can already use internet, but the download speeds are constantly at a very low rate. I did some speedtests on the internet which all told me that my download speed is around 450 kbit/sec which is of course almost nothing.
I suppose the reason is that Orange has not taken over the line yet and the speed will increase after they have done so. Am I right or wrong?
But if I'm right, then I wonder why my upload speed is - according to the speed tests - at 600 kbit/sec (much higher than the download speed!!) and why the livebox gives the following system information:
ADSL firmware version : A2pBT009c1.d17d
Connection mode : ADSL2+
Type : Fast
Noise margin (dB) : 9.1
Attenuation (dB) : 18.5
Attainable download rate (kbps) : 13714
ADSL status : Connected [0]
Rate (kbps): Downstream 13698, Upstream 800
This seems like the downstream is already like it should be... that all confuses me a lot. Please help and explain this to me.

Well with the SNR and Attenuation you've recorded you should be seeing a connection speed on ADSL2+ of 10,000+. I guess you need to wait afew days longer before you see a true conenction speed. It will have nothing to do with Orange taking over the line but there may well be a line fault. You must be fairly close to your local exchange, where in Spain are you....town or in the country ?
This is what really confuses me - the livebox says that the download rate is really fast, but I get at most 60 kbyte/sec in reality. If there was a problem with the line, wouldn't the livebox also report a slow downstream? Does it not use the line to measure the downstream? I still don't get it, sorry.
The speed tests I did on the internet give an upstream of more than 600kbit/sec, which corresponds to the upstream of my livebox report.
So at the moment I can upload with 600 kbit/sec, but download only with 450 kbit/sec, where my livebox tells me something completely different (in the downstream case). Sorry that I repeat myself, but to me this situation is really weird.
Don't worry about Uni2 :-
"Telecoms carrier UNI2, a France Telecom subsidiary, has been doing business in Spain since its telecommunications deregulation in 1998."
So, like Orange, it's part of the France Telecom group.
The Livebox only shows what it's capable of, not what is actually happening between you computer and the Orange servers.
Is the Livebox plugged into the main socket or into an extension socket or into an extension lead from the main socket ?
It should be plugged into the main socket (1st one after the feed cable enters your property). Phone cabling is probably different in Spain than UK so any help pages may not work for you.
Best to plug into the main socket, don't switch the Livebox off and monitor the connection speed using speedtest.net over the next 5 days.
You can log your speeds on this site, check out the menu on the left. Also read through the link on MTU and RWIN Tweaks.....ADSL2+ seems to need an MTU setting of 1500....this can improve connection speed.
I think that the MTU and RWIN settings are fine. I tested the connection speed with my computer and the connection of my neighbor a few minutes ago, and the results were like they should be.
If there is really a problem with the line itself, wouldn't the upstream still be less than the downstream? For the capability of the livebox, the upstream is perfectly okay.
It confuses me a little bit that everytime I refresh my livebox system information, the value for 'attainable download rate' and 'downstream' changes slightly (ranges from 13500 kb/sec to 14000 kb/sec), as if the livebox would actually measure something. If I see just what the livebox is capable of, why do I see different values?
There is only one socket in my apartment, so I have no choice where to plug the livebox in
I am sorry that I ask so many stupid questions, but you are of great help and I am still

No, it's quite possible to have just the downstream connection affected by a line fault.

Try to leave it alone for about 5 days and you will see the same thing happening (naturally rather than you forcing it to change). It will probably settle down because you've only been connected 2 days. Leave it on and leave it alone and the technical gear back at the exchange will sense stability and should automatically give you the best connection.
I have never heard before that a supposedly very fast connection starts with such a low speed and is then dramatically improved after a few days, but we'll see...
