I cannot be the first to spot this, but have you noticed on the website maker login page that we are all currently enjoying "website maker deluxe" on a 6 month free basis and that when that period expires the whole ball-game will change? Here is a clip from my login page
So I contacted Orange yesterday and asked what this meant, and got the following reply:
Thank you for your message.
The date you can see in the Control Centre indicates the end of the free "Deluxe"
trial/ltd. period you're currently on. Orange Website Maker is just a new,
technically different solution. A free option will continue to exist. This is how
it works: When you initially sign up for the new Website Maker on the Orange site,
you will be signed up for the "Website Maker Deluxe limited" rate. You will be
able to use this full-featured rate for free for six months (if you migrated from
the old Orange website solution) or for two weeks (if you just signed up for an
new account through the Orange website). Once the trial period has expired you can
decide whether or not you would like to take advantage of the "Website Maker
Deluxe" package for £2.99 a month. The contractual prices and terms and conditions
will then be valid. If you do not wish to take advantage of this offer, your
access will be converted to a "Website Maker Free" account.
I hope this information helps.
So, having reluctantly sweated blood to rebuild my B&B promo site under the new regime, come January 3rd I'll either have to pay £2.99pcm or be prepared to crop it down to 5 pages which I can have for free. There is no mention of whether the current URL will continue to apply to the shrunken site or whether it will be changed to something else. If that is the case then I shall have to (again) go through the laborious business of getting my Accommodation Provider hosting websites to change my URL ... or nobody will ever come to stay with me!
The human spirit can only take just so many knocks. I am now going to start building a website with a different web-buider and will keep it in reserve for when the moment comes when I inevitably pull the plug on Orange.
UPDATE...... this received today. SIGNIFICANT that if you have a multipage site then it will survive and be modifiable. So the moral is CREATE A NUMBER OF SPARE PAGES straight away, get your retiation in first!
"Sorry to hear about your disappointment with the new website system. You will find
the key differences between the free and "Deluxe" account type outlined on the
following page:
http://website.orange.co.uk/uk...ail.9.html
I suppose the main limitation that will make a significant difference to most
customers is the limitation to 5 pages in your project/site. I understand from my
colleagues that the downgrade from a Deluxe/trial account to a free account is
performed in a manner that your current site, with the full number of pages, will
continue to exist. You just won't be able to add any more pages or start a new
project that exceeds the limitations of the free rate.
I hope this info helps and fully understand that a different hosting package might
be preferable for your purposes. You might want to check whether the following
offer is interesting to you:
