The problem manifests as items sat in my Outlook 2003 outbox.
Oddly it seems to happen >13:00 per day, the error window displays typical sending failure codes of 500 and 501, Syntax error command unrecognized and error in parameters or arguments respectively.
via Outlook, Outlook Express, Apple Mail, Mail.app on iPhone.....NONE of which work on port 25!
ANY web based email system works fine (it would its via port 80)
if I telnet to port 25 on smtp.orangehome.co.uk i get the following errors direct from the server:
220 mwinf3012.me.freeserve.com ESMTP ABO **************************
500 Error: bad syntax
...yet when I explain this to the infinite wisdom of Orange support in deepest India, Im told that unless 5-10 people report an email problem they wont act upon it!!!! CRAZY.
So I resort to emailing support instead....figured at least I wont be driven insane by random number pressing of the so called automated(?) system....its not like its a new problem... its been happening for months.
Instead out of all the technical info I provided they see the word iPhone and say
"Orange does not support iPhone" within the first 3 lines! FUNNY CAUSE FROM WHERE I'M SITTING Orange DOESN'T APPEAR TO SUPPORT ANYTHING, REGARDLESS OF WHO MAKES IT!!!
<sigh> <breath> <breath>
switching outbound servers to another host and using an alternate port to the Orange blocked 25, works fine for me.....
So for all you struggling, you have my sympathy, we've all been there and GOOGLE is your friend!
and is it me or is there something really annoying about their opening email response of "We understand your concern and we will certainly help you"
second to BT, I find the entire Orange support experience incredibly frustrating....but hey, who am I, I'm just a customer I guess!
