I'm a long-time Orange customer, starting out with Freeserve and then Wanadoo and finally onto Orange.
Soon after upgrading to broadband, problems started with frequent disconnections and slow speeds. Recently, things have improved slightly, but I think it's now time for a change.
I've been in contact with Orange and they informed me that my contract with them ends on 7th December 2008.
What is the process to actually move from them to another ISP? I've been looking to move to Be (seems a more reliable service). When do I have to contact Orange to get a MAC code from them? I've noticed that I have to give them 30 days notice. Does this mean I can contact them on 7th November and start the ball rolling from there?
Any help people can provide would be most appreciated.
You need a BT line for Be/o2 (now Sky) so depending on what Orange package you're on, you can't migrate until the BT line is active.
So if you have a BT line, you could ask for your MAC around 23 November (14 days before contract end) place your order and MAC with Be/o2 (now Sky) and specify a migration date of 7 December.
I take it that I'll still need to pay Orange for that 30 days notice period, yes?
Oh Yes !!.....to me that's the "unfair" contract clause that OFCOM should be investigating.
All contracts that I've ever dealt with, require nn days notice of termination during which supply is continued then once the notice period is over, all contractual supply and payment ceases.
But AFAIK for broadband, all ISPs use the same procedure, you migrate to the new ISP at which point the old ISP ceases supply but still gets paid for another 30 days ......I can't wait for it to be challenged in court
Once I've been migrated over to the new ISP and the 30 days notice period kicks in, do I have to call Orange to cancel my contract, or do they automatically assume that since I've moved to another ISP, then I'm finished with them and they'll just close my account at the end of the 30 days? Knowing Orange I'll probably have to call them one last time and be charged for that too!
I'm trying to do as little calling to the Indian call centre as possible.

There's no guarantee that Orange will check if the MAC has been used or that your new ISP will notify Orange....nobody likes phoning Orange
It's better to phone them on the day you migrate, first check that it is your new ISP supplying, requesting cancellation of your account then you can wish them all the best for the future.....if they have one that is
I'd ask for the MAC code around early Nov, not 23rd.
Give it to Be - say you''re migrated on the 10th Nov
Give Orange the 30 day cancellation notice the day you're migrated - this will easily take you past the 7th Dec
It doesn't solve the problem of paying for a month that you don't use, but it allows you to leave Orange earlier than above. It worked for me
