Luckily I didn't get much hassle from Orange - MAC request to migration period was relatively ok; had a bit of a delay with the MAC code, but I got it off the phone in the end, so all ended well.
Now I've got a 12meg downstream speed (apparently according to one website) , which I thought was impossible on my line.
Anyway, just wanted to say thanks to everyone who has helped out on here; and to those who are still stuck trying to leave Orange - hang on in there and keep trying. It is well worth it in the end!
