Am due to migrate away from Orange (non LLU) to another non LLU supplier in ~ 7 days; I will pay my next DD on 6th Sept which as far as I can see covers me up to 20th Sept with Orange.
On the day of my migration I intend to phone Orange to ensure my account is closed and inform them that I have cancelled the DD WEF 7th September.
Because of the 30 day notice period,I will owe them part of a month til xth October. Can I pay this small amount by chq? I am loathe to give them a credit or debit card details as I can see them charging future amounts to them and I don't want to leave the DD open for the same reasons.I don't want to spend months chasing up credits (it took 6 months to get the last credit thru' and it barely covered my phone calls!!)
Anyone ??

I may be wrong but I think Orange require either DD or CC or DC, I don't believe you can pay by cheque (not many companies accept cheques now).
Your 30 day notice period commences on the day of migration, don't forget to ring them to confirm the MAC has been used and the contract has been cancelled.
I would leave the DD in place until the 30 day period has passed then cancel it.
I've actually now left Orange for PlusNet - initial impressions very favourable.Cheaper, faster, much higher D/L limit and (so far) infinitely better C/Services.
On the day of migration I talked to Customer Services to ensure my account was closed - the person I spoke to said that my account was marked to be closed on 19th Sept when my MAC expired.I queried this and was assured that the last direct debit would be the September one covering 22nd August to 21st Sept.I then emailed for confirmation and was given exactly the same info ie that the notice period had been applied when the MAC was issued - this strikes me as a change of policy somewhere.
So I'm waiting for the Sept account date (22nd) - if all is well I'll be cancelling my DD and will be finally out

If you have given your MAC code to your new provider it should take them up to 5 working days to take over your line (in which time you may loose your connection). When you first request your MAC code you have a 30 days cancellation applied on your account and within this time your final bill comes out and the account closes. Once the account is closed nothing can be processed on your direct debit so don't worry- as long as there's no further charges (which you can check in the member centre), you're fine
If you are an Orange employee or contractor, you need to remember that you're now trying to help people rather than follow Orange procedures so it's essential that you tell the truth on here.
As expected an Orange cock up after my migration away!
Got an email this am telling me my bill was ready for viewing - showed a further month til 21st October ! Phoned up C/Services and (first piece of good luck), got a Yorkie lass who initially told me "bill was wrong" -BT Wholesale had informed them I migrated on 10th Sept so notice period would be up 9th October so I would owe them a lesser amount than shown.
I then pointed out phone conversation and email of 5/6th Sept. She read the notes out aloud - gave a big sigh !! -and put me on hold whilst she talked to Cancellations.
After a couple of minutes came back to me and informed me that previou info given on the phone and by email was incorrect;I told her I had cancelled DD so didn't intend to pay anything further on basis of previous info. received in good faith.
At this point she conceded defeat and told me that she would get account cancelled with immediate effect and I have now received email confirmation.
As borednow says, ignore The Advisor's post - the cancellation notice is not applied until BTWHOLESALE inform Orange of successful migration which could be several days after the actual event - notice period does not start when MAC is asked for - I was just lucky!!!

Just received another email from Orange as follows:-
"Unfortunately the payment details we have for you seem to be incorrect and we just need you to update them for us.
It's easy to do, just go to https://www.orange.co.uk/membercentre/youraccount/ to change your details online, or give us a call on 0844 873 8586* or 0844 871 0079* if you're on our starter packages between 7am and 11pm, any day of the week.
For customers on one of our discounted broadband packages, with an Orange pay monthly mobile contract, you'll need to call 150 from your mobile phone for free; lines are open all day, every day.
Please do it as soon as you can, otherwise we won't be able to take your monthly payment and you'll be charged a £5 late payment fee."
As THEY had closed my account there is nothing there anymore - Oh well, another email to C/Disservices coming up!!

Received a reply from Orange C/S re above:-
"We understand your concern and we will certainly assist you.
As per records your account is close and there is no Outstanding balance
on your account.
Your account was closed on 22nd September, 2008 since your billing date
is also 22nd of every month, system would have tried to take monies from
your account. As there is no outstanding balance on your account please
ignore the email regarding payment details."
However they did try to take the DD again on 6th October - yet another email arrived asking for bank details!!!
Now, when I go on the Orange site it signs me in as "pay and go" and I can't see any past statements - does this mean I'm finally clear ??
