I received a letter from Orange last June telling me they were capping my speed as I had used 68Gb a month over April and May 2008. With my ancient computer this simply wasn't possible and I don't download, music, films or anything, just check my emails and surf for an hour a day. I had noticed my livebox was continually flashing the >> light even when my computer was turned off and unplugged from the mains, so I assumed it was a livebox fault causing the high readings.
After much kerfuffle Orange finally sent me a replacement livebox. I called Orange Customer Service to check what "fair usage" was, and after an amazing run around an advisor finally admitted to 40Gb a month. My speeds were capped however, so in order to get my speed back after the initial capping expired I started unplugging the livebox from the mains power.
In September I received a letter from Orange saying my usage was down and they were returning me to original speed. Determined not to be caught by the livebox again I continued unplugging it when I wasn't online. I also installed a bandwidth monitor to check my usage. As I expected it was under 2Gb a month.
Today I have received another letter saying my speed is going to be permanently capped because over August and September I used an average of 9.9Gb a month!
Since when did "fair usage" become so low? and has anyone else had these enormous amounts supposedly used because of a flashing >> light on the livebox when they weren't online/had the computer unplugged?
The flashing light on the livebox suggests that your connection is in use..so if your not using it someone else is.
Im not familiar with people being able to hack the livebox...but then again theres some clever sneaky gits out there.
10 gb is ample for the use you say your using tho...so i wouldnt worry on that score...you just need to find out why the bandwidth being used is so high....
