We signed up with freeserve over 10 years ago and were extremely happy with it... then wanadoo came along and we found that quite good too... but now that Orange has taken over, we've had tons of problems...
so, we were thinking of moving to PlusNet, but i have a couple of questions first... firstly, we have become heavily reliant on our email addresses (having had them for over a decade...) so is there anyway to keep the same email address without paying monthly...? or if not, anything that doesn't cost too much...?
Secondly, we have the "Broadband at £17.99 1Meg speed 2GB cap" which we got from wanadoo, so it's been longer than the original 12 month contract... however, we upgraded the speed back in february or so and i'm wondering if that possibly extended the contract or something... you have to pay of the remainder of your contract if you want to leave don't you...?
I think you will find that when you upgraded your speed in February, without so much as a mutter, Orange would have surreptitiously lulled you into a brand new (now 18 month!) contract. People only tend to find this out upon either reading the (very) small print in the T&C, or else when they try to leave and request MAC code, only to be informed they are trapped in a lengthy contract. You can pay your way out, but this could turn out quite costly, depending upon the duration left on your contract.
Not sure about keeping your email addresses - I think it may be possible, but I'm sure someone more knowledgeable on here will come along and confirm that for you. I couldn't wait to ditch the whole package - email and all!!
Good luck.
Sponge (ex-Orange customer and ecstatic I'm out!).
I can still access my old Freeserve email address through the Orange Homepage and it's always a pleasure to see that I'm still getting an average of 200 SPAM's per day.
It only took me about 3 months for all those I wanted to remain in contact with to receive my new email address. Honest it's not difficult to change an email address and well worth it to escape Orange.
we also have two or Three websites, and many companies etc also have ti as we have two businesses... changing is not really an option...
If you have web sites then there's no need to rely on Orange for email addresses. In fact even without web sites Googlemail is an option, or buy a domain for use just for email.
This isn't a criticism of you because thousands of others are doing the same and I know it's a case of stable door and horses but when running businesses a proper business ISP should be used even though it's more expensive, then you don't risk the problems that ISPs such as Orange create for their non-commercial customers.
remember that we have been using them since the freeserve days which were excellent...
and forget the lookign back bit... our email addresses are now Orange... i can't change them... what can i do...
i know i should change them, or ahve them with googlemail or whatever, but i can't...
Lot of negatives there InvObl .....you're not likely improve anything like that.
Bite the bullet, get a Googlemail address and begin notifying your contacts of it, starting with the least important and working up the list.
that could take a while... business cards etc etc...
there's alot fto get changed...
anyway i can keep my email addresse AND leave...?
Of course, that's why it's not such a daunting prospect as you imagine it to be. The change can be managed over a period of time.
Even in your latest post, there's still negative vibes, be more positive and set a target date to notify all your private contacts then another target date to notify all your business contacts.

Yes you can continue to use your Orange account for email at no charge. However Orange block you from sending mail through their SMTP (outgoing) mail servers unless you use their PAYG dial in number to access the account (something to do with blocking spam) You therefore need to send SMTP outgoing mail via your new providers mail server. You can download mail from the Orange POP server directly (they don't interfer with incoming mail) so you can download all your thousands of spam emails wthout any problems at all.
It's taken me about 6 months to switch from my old freeserve email address. Got fed up of all the spam
Started notifying my contacts & set up new googlemail accounts for the business & websites & just get the odd 'real' email through now. I also use a 'catch all' with my business & personal website domain name email addresses so that helps!
It can be done - and now that that ftp is being removed I don't have to stay with Orange any more
