I have had a lot of problems with my PC so I have reinstalled Windows XP.
However when I plug my Livebox directly into my PC I cannot get the internet to work (won't ping 192.168.1.1) but when I plug it into my Laptop the internet works.
I know the problem is with my PC but does anyone know hat it could be ?
Look under control panal -> system -> hardware -> device manager -> network adapters. You should see 1394 and also the name of your network card there. Does the NIC card have a green card symbol by it (like 1394) or a yellow question mark.

Under Network Adapter it has 1394 Net Adapter and there is no yellow exclamation mark. The properties say that the device is working properly.
However under other devices there are 2 ethernet controllers and 2 multimedia audio controllers anda SM Bus controller and all these have a yellow exclamation mark and all have no drivers installed.
When I go into my network connections and LAN connection it looks like I have no IP address.
That'll be your problem then. If these are on a PC, they are likely to be 2 of the following
- an ethernet card
- a modem
- a wirless interface (probably least likely)
You'll need to find the driver from the computer that can connect to the internet and put it over to the one that can't. Also prepare your anti virus and firewall though before you install the drivers for the network card
Good Luck

TO TEST NETWORK CONNECTION:
Just run through these test to make sure connection between Livebox and computer is ok - from what you have said it now sounds ok.
Are you sure that you have a network card in the computer - I know it sounds daft - but they look very similar to modems.
Is the network card turned off in the bios.
(Start - All Programs - Accessories)
Open Command Prompt
Ping 192.168.1.1 -t
Control C to stop
For info purposes this command does a continuous loopback ping to the router. Without the -t it only does it 4 times. Its a means of quickly checking connectivity between PC and router.
If no connection will say:
Destination host unreachable.
Check into Network Connections through the control panel. Double click your local area connection. What status does it show? If connected go into the support tab, what does it show in there?
You could also right click the connection and repair it.
There could be a problem with network cable - try another one. Also if you are in the red socket on the Livebox try the yellow one.
There could be a problem with network card or drivers - first try re-installing drivers - re-boot computer.
If still no luck I would physically take network card out of computer - re-boot computer, then turn off. Re-install network card and allow XP to to find and install it.
NETWORK PROBLEMS
As long as the IP address doesn't end .1, .254 or .255 then that should be working.
Open internet explorer and put into the address bar:
216.239.39.99
If you get google then it's just the lack of DNS servers or incorrect ones thats the cause.
Get into the properties for the connection,
Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click properties,
You'll have the manual IP set there,
If you wanted a DHCP address you simply set that and the DNS option below it to auto.
However with a manual IP it requires manually set DNS servers so enter the following:
195.92.195.94
195.92.195.95
