hi.
i dont really know much about computers, so please be understanding.
i now have a livebox, (damn, damn, damn).
in my house we have Three computers.
no. 1/ my son's room. ubuntu, hard wired.
no. 2/ laptop, xp, wireless.
no. 3/ my daughter's room, xp, wireless.
i used to use a speedtouch with tiscali. (should have stayed), with no problems at all, but i wanted to combine my bills, they could not do my phone line so i changed to Orange.
to start with i could not get a connection using the red socket on the livebox, orange said there must be a fault on the box, so i would have to use the yellow one.
this meant that i could only hard wire one computer, any more would have to be wireless.
the laptop connects no problem, but my daughters doesn't.
her connection sometimes drops whilst in use, but more annoying is the fact that every time the computer is turned off we have to re install the livebox.
this involves the hole installation process, except putting the box into pairing mode, for some reason we do not have to do this. the wireless card that she uses is an "atheros ar5005gs" that i bought from dabs.
my son has only recently changed to ubuntu, he also used to use xp, but we had this problem then as well, so the change to linux did not cause or effect it.
any help would be great.
mick.
Firstly you mentioned the Red Port didn't work... I'm guessing you are using the most recent firmware..If this is the case you can try disabling the Digital TV.. As this is supposed to use the Yellow Port, but could be the other way round?.
To do this... Open a new Browser window in IE or Firefox. Type in the address bar 192.168.1.1 ( This must be done on a computer that is connected to the Livebox ). Click the Orange Text.. And enter your details..

Password:Admin (Unless Changed)
You will be greeted with a "My Services" section with a small 3x5 grid.. One says Digitial TV Automatic Change... Click Change and then Disable.. Try the red port.. If still nothing then i think for once CS may have been right..
As for the Atheros Card.. When the Laptop is switched off.. And back on again.. Does the Atheros pick up the Livebox on Windows start up.. Or does the whole Wifi card not work.. The reason you don't have to put the Livebox into pairing mode is because the MAC code for the Atheros is saved to the Livebox for future connection. What i would recommend doing.. Is sitting the laptop right next to the Livebox.. And checking the Signal strength.. Then maybe going through the channels.. This can be done under Security>>Wireless Connection..
Now.. This is where i'm a bit confused.. When you say " Livebox has to be re-installed "
You have to:
1) Go through Add or Remove Programs.. Find the Atheros card and remove and re-install..
2) Go into Connect To A Network on the XP Taskbar and re enter the WPA code everytime you wish to connect..
My instinct is telling me the 2nd one is more likely... Errm.
I'm guessing the Atheros comes with it's own software for connecting to a network.. (As i use a Belkin Wireless G+ USB for my mums comp in the other room and that uses seperate software unless you disable the DMZ.. Thingy.. In the Taskbar..)
I think answering the following questions may help me/others into diagnosing the problem..
1) The Question Above..
2) If Anything I've Already Mentioned Has Worked.
3) When your Daughters Laptop is connected.. How is the Signal Strength... And when it does disconnect... Does it completely disconnect or just go to Local Only in the Taskbar.. Try Right Clicking the Network Icon in the Taskbar and clicking on Diagnose & Repair.. ( Says something like that.. )
I hope this is the first step to getting all your comps up and running..
Any problems. Don't be afraid reply with a question on something.. We all start learning about computers somewhere.. :p
p.s If any Menus or buttons are a bit different to what i said.. Then i apologise.. But i'm running Vista and having to remember what XP looks like..
