Hello,
Firstly congratulations and many thanks to all concerned for running this site, it's a godsend.
I've been into this ISP since the Freeserve days and have been mostly happy with the speeds for a number of years, until the rot set in when it was taken over by Wanadoo, it was a slippery slope from there on in and now i'm real close to quitting even though they basically conned me into staying with them by offering the carrot of a "free" upgrade upto 8Mg. Yes i took that carrot and am now LLU'd. I have had nothing like 8Mg ever, even though my Exchange "pendleton" is ADSL Max enabled according to Samknows.
My connection dropped yesterday but i turned it off and walked away in the hope that it would be up again today....no chance !
I phoned CS and explained, to cut a long story short they gave me their recommended Router settings, even though mine have been working just fine for the last 2 years. I wont change any settings given to me by them and was just wondering if anyone had used these settings ?
I dont use a Live box i have a D-Link DSL 504T Wired router which with it's current settings works fine.
If you've been connected previously then all the settings that matter should be fine. If it's a UK router then it's probably got the main ones preset in it.
The reason they gave you them is because it's a router they don't know how to access or check. Within it's config are the settings already on what they gave to you? (Should be) Also what specifically does it say about the connection as that can give hints.
The router would appear to support 8Mg. DSL Speed - Upstream = 288 Kbps
Downstream = 8128 Kbps.
Not all of the settings they gave me need altering, the ones that do are as follows ;
Encapsulation - Current LLC. change to VC.
MTU - Current 1400. Change to 1500.
Modulation Type - Current MMODE. Change to G.DMT
In the Dns Config section i am using the option of Use Auto Discovered DNS Server only. The Ip for the preffered Dns Server is different to the one Orange have given me for the Primary Dns Server, not sure i understand whether thats relevant ?
I decided to change 1 of the settings, the Encapsulation. I changed it to VC and immediatley lost my connection so i changed it back and the connection failed, so i re-booted the pc and the router, still nothing. I then performed a factory reset on the router and it still failed after setting it up again. Eventually i used the option of Windows repairing the connection and it has worked.
After that little experience i dont think i should change anything. If anyone could inform me otherwise. feel free.

Hmm normally you don't need to mess with that for routers.

Modulation should be on Multi Mode, I assume the MMODE you already have it set to.

Shouldn't really matter, even with wrong addresses the connection will still work, just wouldn't be able to resolve addresses.

Is there an option for PPPoA or PPPoATM as thats what the encapsulation ought to be set to.
These are all in the article on settings. Go into the Orange help section and search for "settings", click the first link that comes up.
Thanks Elhana,
The section on the Orange site is a copy of the settings i was given by CS.
I have not changed anything now i'm back on my original settings and i have a connection albeit a shaky one !
The only options i have for Encapsulation are......
PPPOA
PPPOE
STATIC
DHCP
BRIDGE
CLIP
No option for PPP over ATM..... could this not be the same as PPPOA ?

Yeah they're the same, just some companys have it listed differently in their settings. Usually calling is PPPoA to make it shorter and simpler when the actual setting is PPPoATM.
