we got a letter from Orange and i really don't know what to think about it. my mum is annoyed about it and my step dad is furious since he said it sounds so arrogant. so here it is..
We need to let you know that the average monthly usage on your broadband account across April and May was 54 GB. This is in breach of our Fair Use Policy (please visit www.orange.co.uk/terms to see the policy) and it heavily affects the performance of the internet for our other broadband customers.
When you signed up for Orange broadband, you agreed to our terms and conditions which say we can suspend or terminate your account if you breach the Fair Use Policy. However, we would much rather reduce your usage, especially at peak times, so that you won't be in breach of the policy.
So, we're writing to let you know that at peak times (6pm-midnight), we may start reducing your usage by capping your connection speed. We'll keep an eye on the usage for a while, and if we see that it's changed sufficiently to meet our policy requirements, we may restore your connection speed during those times.
We're doing this so that we can give all our customers the best internet experience that we're able to provide.
I'm quite happily doing at least 15 - 20GB (upload and download) a month, and nobody has said anything here. (They do seem to have started capping my connection to <2Mbps after about 9AM though.)
We haven't had a letter informing us of any changes, but there is something odd going on. In addition to that, it would appear that they cap your download speed only, and not the upload (even though most of my bandwidth is upload).
I'm hosting a load of websites from here and they average about 8GB upstream per month, and I'm a rather heavy surfer (big downloads, internet radio, etc etc), which contributes at least another 5 or 6GB download every month. Then there's everyone else in the family, and that adds up.
OK, If you're averaging 54GB per month download, I'd like to think they have a right to moan at you. But in reality, 54GB per month is about 20KB/s on average. If the Orange network can't handle 20KB/s continuous from all its users, one has to wonder what they are using. A 10/100 ethernet connection ought to be able to handle maybe 500 users, all doing 20KB/s. Gigabit is going to be 5000 users. Fibre is probably 10Gbps, so say 50000 users per Fibre link. Orange has, what, 1.5 million customers, so that's 30 fibre links. At this stage I'd begin to start thinking: They ought to be able to do that...... OK, it's expensive to manage, but c'mon Orange, you're an ISP.
I'm relatively certain that it wouldn't have been 20KB/s continuous, more like peaks during peak times, but it makes it simpler to work with in the analysis.
I know my numbers are going to be slightly out, but even so, what do people make of that analysis.
If you look here, you'll see I started a topic on this a while back. You may find the info there useful rather than the same things being discussed again elsewhere.

Purely hypothetical.....just like an "8mb" broadband service.
No delivery system, no matter what it is providing, can cope with a sudden, unanticipated high demand.
