My main computer is connected to the Livebox via the Ethernet cable and works fine (after small problem solved, see other post by Bill Oddie). Two weeks later I have decided to try to set up my older computer which runs Windows ME, but due to its age does not have a ethernet port but does have USB ports. This computer is in an other location from the livebox so I decided to buy an Orange USB adapter to go wireless. After several attemps to get my adapter to reconise the Livebox I have now ended up with the following:-
My signal strength is about 40% according to the USB, but each time I attempt to look on the internet my computer refuses to logon. The Old Black and White page (as if working off line) appears.
I have a green dot and a couple of coloured bars.
Anybody got any ideas
Mybe I'm missing smething obvious. The internet 'connections' are set up to never dial up a connection, also the LAN settings page is left uncheckecd on all options. My USB identifies my Livebox number, so I,m a bit lost as what to do.
Also is the Livebox always connected to the web 24 hours a day looking down the line? It just when I connect on my main computer it never asks for a connection, the web pages are shown straight away.
Thanks for any help,
yes as long as you don't power off the livebox it is permenantly connected
that is the best way to leave it as it saves having to wait for it to login and it also allows it to download updates
try moving the livebox closer to the computer and see if the wireless works then
also make sure the browser is not working in "offline mode"
I think I'm getting there! The prblem I found was that the MAC address was alternating between 00.00.00.00 etc. and my MAC number. When I leave the computer a little longer in pairing made with the livebox the numbers stop alternating and I can connect to the web .
But.............
When I shut the computer down and restart at a later time I find that the Black and White Error page reappears and I have to start the pairing cycle again. The problem is I don't know what to save on the moniter help page which asks NEW or DEFAULT. When to save, i.e after the MAC address settles and as what, new or default?
Ok, thats starting to sound a lot like an interference issue or less likely some sort of TCP/IP system problem.
Changing the channel is probably the way to go.
On the wired pc open the config pages, access Security > Wireless Connection. Change the channel over to another, it's best to skip a few each time and not try the next channel up straight away. Once submitted wait a few moments for it to settle, unplug the wireless adapter, replug and it should try to reconnect. Check the signal strength for a general idea of if it's helping or not.
