I'm currently on home max and unhappy with the speed I'm getting. I feel kind of guilty complaining about this because so many of you seem to be getting less than 512kbps, but nevertheless my sub 2mb speeds are only just enough for me right now and I'm concerned about the future. My exchange has no llus and it looks as though there will be no upgrades to the exhange until at least q4 2009.
I'm very suspicious of Orange and I believe my line can take more than 2mb, I'm signed up as 4mb with them, but never get above 2000kbps downstream. Back when I upgraded from 2mb to 4mb I used to get up to 3500kbps sometimes, but nowadays I get about 1800 normally. It just seems like things are going backwards rather than forwards.
I used the BT website to get an estimate on what my line should be able to support, I typed in my phone number and it said 0.5mb, I typed in my postcode and it said 5.0mb. So that's really no help at all is it. F**king useless. What can I do to find out if I my line can take more? I'm considering switching isp, I've been with Orange for over 4 years now I think, back when they were wanadoo, but I'm sick of the service now, I get no where with the customer support line, I'm thinking of switching to Sky broadband, but I'm worried that my connection will not improve after switching, or it may even be worse. I don't want to gamble and to play games, I just want a reasonable 4mb or faster, stable connection for a reasonable price, yet for some reason that's too much to ask apparently.
I just called Sky and asked them if they could supply me with a better speed than 2mb, but all they did was run that stupid BT speedtest using my phone number to get the same result as I got, 0.5mb. I know my line can support more than that, I used to have 1mb with wanadoo and it was perfectly stable, then I upgraded to 2mb, still stable. Not quite so stable now with Orange, but still, 0.5mb? Are they kidding me? If I put in my post code in instead of my phone number it says I can get 5.0mb, which I believe is a more accurate estimate. But what could I do? If the test they use says 0.5mb then that's all they've got to go by. I don't see why I can't get a decent speed, I don't live that far from the exchange, my line attenuation seems reasonable.
Like you say cloud - you have actually used 2 MB on your line.
Orange are renound for telling customers anything but the truth just to fob them off.
This is speaking from experience.
I left Orange a couple of years ago after the connection kept going off then dead for 2 weeks.
They gave me 608 KB connecton - just over 1/2 MB and said that was the fastest available for the line.
I moved to Idnet and got 3 MB, now I'm with o2 (now Sky) and get 5 MB so it's Orange who got it wrong.
Most ISP's take the BT checker result because there's usually not much else to give an estimated speed. Remember it's only an estimate and the real speed will often be lower or higher than that shows.
The BT checker is somewhat renowned for giving incorrect results, as in this case 1/2 meg when clearly the line is actually running at more.
First place to start would be with the line stats and a BT speedtest result. They would help give an idea of the situation, what's capable and what could be wrong.
Ok, I posted a thread at dsl zone and eventually that discussion led to me calling out an engineer who replaced some wires and that seems to have stopped any noise that I had on the line. (which I don't think I mentioned in this thread)
I'm using the livebox now rather than my speedtouch modem, it helped a bit. So right now, I'm getting speeds of around 2.5Mb, which is a decent increase from about 1.8 which I was getting before. I did a BT speedtest. Here are the results.
I'm supposed to be on 4 Mb, yet my ip profile says 2.5? Why is that?
IP profile for your line is - 2500 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 3264 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 2355 kbps

Good start, that may have helped clear up part of the problem.

Ok two parts to this.
First at the current time you cannot get 4 meg, the line is connected to the exchange at 3264 meaning a 2.5meg profile is the maximum it can run, it would need to be stably over 3424 to get 3meg.
Next, the speed is lower probably due to the noise margin. It's been targetted to 15 (highest the system will go target wise) probably due to the original problem. This sacrifices speed for stability and is done automatically by the system when needed. As long as the problem has actually gone away then the margin target should be re-examined within 2 weeks so it should be a matter of waiting. Technically BT don't class this as a fault as the system is designed to run this way.
Thanks for the reply. It seems the engineer didn't fix the problem after all. My connection had been running for 4 days, perfectly stable, the line nosie free, but this morning the line was suddenly noisy again while making a phone call. VERY noisy. As an experiment I called the landline with a mobile and the noise almost completely disappeared. Odd thing is that I'm quite sure I've done that in the past and it didn't make any difference back then. The whole thing seems very random.
I remember the engi said to keep an eye on the weather if the problem still persists, but it's quite clear today, no rain, not very windy. So I don't think that the weather is causing this. Hmm. Well, I'm back to square one really. Bugger.
