Problem (1)Getting excellent speeds in downstairs back room of house (1.9MB on a 2MB connection) on Orange Home starter with a Siemens Router and Desktop PC.
Using the same master socket (I've managed to do this as master socket is lying loose under the stairs on a 5m cable) and all other connections (mouse, printer, keyboard, speakers) exactly the the same, when I move everything upstairs the connection is slow and unreliable.
Is it possible to get interference from a neighbour's wireless system? When I switch on a laptop I can pick up a neighbour's broadband from the upstairs room but not the downstairs room which leads me to think that that interference from the neighbour's system might be the problem. Anyone ever come across this?
Problem (2). Everything works fine with old CRT monitor but when I plug in flat screen the router crashes - how weird is that!! Anyone out there with any clues?

I can see sometimes an average of 10 to 12 other wireless networks in my range, It is weird with the monitor, have you tried changing the wireless channel? channel 6 always works best for me.

Thanks Elanha and Stevelondon.
The router loses its connection or drastically slows down when the TFT monitor is switched on. Have tried various channels and same scenario. Going to borrow another TFT tomorrow to see what happens with that.
Regarding router location when in Upstairs/front in house with CRT monitor the speed is 250kbps. Downstairs/back of house it is 1940kbps. So there must be some interference to router. Again different channels make no difference. Have switched off cordless phones - no joy. Getting desperate with the location issue. Next step is my FM Transmittor in my car! (as I say getting desperate). What about my Sky dish - upstairs front of house?? So, I have bought a Belkin wireless G+ adaptor so that I can have the router downstairs and computer upstairs. This is still in box as I would rather find the real problem.
Is that straightfoward? Take it I just disconnect existing router and plug in netgear one. Take it you mean the XP New Connection Wizard and assume this will just pick up the new router. Will I lose my info for old router if I do this? Not sure what the password you refer to is - only password I have is for the Orange account or the SSID.

It wont effect anything on ur pc just connect the router type 192.168.0.1 in the main address bar in ur browser to login default are the username is admin and the password is password or whatever u have changed the password to run the set up wizard it should detect your settings or manually put them in
* Encapsulation: PPP over ATM
* Multiplexing method: VC-Based
* Virtual circuit: VPI=0 VCI=38
* Modulation: Multi mode
* Authentication: CHAP
then ur DSL username and password mine used to end with @fs or check
here im sure Elhana will put u right on that, check ur settings in the sagem ur network name (SSID ) and network key etc. you do not need to touch the new connection wizard on ur pc, if your using ethernet it will connect to the router when plugged into the pc if wirelessly right click on the wireless icon by the clock in system tray and choose to view networks highlight urs choose connect and put in ur network password, make sure you allow the pc to connect to the router by adding it to the access list in wireless settings in your router you should see it there waiting to be added.
However seeings you are just testing it to see if the monitor crashes it it wont hurt to leave it unsecured for a few minutes you can always secure it if you decide to leave it connected and use it permanantly.

Thanks for all help on this. Still using the Orange router and have changed channel to CH6. Regularly getting speeds of between 1300 and 2065 kbps. That's in excess of 2 meg - how does that work?
Anywaty still got the old monitor problem. Have now tried a borrowed CRT (works fine) and a TFT (works fine) however my TFT interferes with the Router. Switch monitor on - lose connection of painfully slow. Switch off and all's well.
Next I am going to swap the power lead to see if that makes a difference. Any other ideas - anyone???

Have you tried the Netgear? it will be the only way to know if its the router or not to see if its the router your using is at fault, it does seem like its the router by trying the Netgear you might solve the problem much quicker.

Did as you say. Plugged in the Netwgear router. Typed that address in the browser but nothing happened. Must be a bit chicken and egg this - how do you connect to that site when you haven't got a connection. Tried that site with my Orange router (internet working) and it's as though the address is wrong.
Would really to try this one last thing before I fork out on a new monitor or are there anymore settings changes I can make on the Orange router?

Only way you can connect to router config is if you have either a Local Or Internet Connection. Or have an Ethernet cable plugged in...
Netgear and Linksys routers are found at 192.168.1.1.; DLink at 192.168.0.1; Beklin at 192.168.2.1.

Netgears are 192.168.0.1
Sorry just saw ur post
You should have been able to connect to the routers web interface if you plugged the ethernet in.
Did you get it sorted yet?

Connect up the ethernet cable,
Go into Network Connections through the control panel,
Double click the Local Area connection to get into the status,
Select the support tab,
Find the default gateway and enter this into internet explorer,
This should get you to the router config if not what happens and what are the details on the support tab?
