I am posting this on behalf of a friend who cannot get get her PC to link to her new livebox from Orange. It keeps coming up with a message saying there may be a firewall problem. Her firewall (Zone Alarm) is disabled and she has disabled her Norton Antivirus too but no difference.

She is running Windows ME and has used an ethernet to USB adapter to connect the livebox as her PC has no ethernet card. Is this the problem or might it be something else in ME?

does it work with another router/eithernet device

it sounds more like the usb adaptor isnt working...

have you tried wireless or a pci eithernet card?

Thanks for your comments. You were right it was the adapter and a new ethernet card with a direct connection did the trick.
