I am looking to move from f2s to Orange BB, for the sole reason that i am going on contract with Orange mobile and can get uncapped 8mb broadband in with my contract for £10.
As i am going for the "top" broadband service i will be supplied with a livebox, i have no problem with this. However, none of my peripherals have wireless capabilities. I access everything through a broadband modem/router.
If i go for the Orange broadband, can i just disregard the livebox and put the connection settings into my router, or is the livebox necesarry to access the internet. ie do they have some sort of inbuilt security to prevent you using your own equipment.
i asked in the Orange shop and they said you can connect to the livebox with wires, so it wont be a problem, but they are salesmen so i dont trust them
I just spoke to a friend that works in networking. he told me i can connect the livebox modem to my router, and that if i disable/enable some setting on the router i can convert it into a switch.
then i can use the remaning free ports on the "switch" to connect my other wired equipment.
this solution is ideal as my router has four ports, but i only use Three, so the spare port will connect to the livebox.
Your friend is referring to turning off the DHCP server I believe but I'm not certain if the livebox will work the way you describe it, passing the talk service through the ethernet connection, router and back to Orange.
If you want the talk service you may end up using the livebox, connecting it to the line and then using your router with DHCP off as a switch so in effect the livebox does all the work and the router simply provides more ports.
the livebox has to be connected to the internet phone and the broadband filter
you cant use it for the talk service without it being used as the modem
you could however use a wireless access point plugged into the eithernet port on the livebox open all ports to forward to it, then turn wireless off in the livebox...
