I have 4mb with Orange, though since I "upgraded" from 2 to 4 my speed had seen a slight decrease, but there we go. But anyway, that's beside the point. My current problem is as follows: Last night my connection dropped and I reconnected at 800 something kbps. I connected this morning and it connected at 2.5mpbs, so I thought it had fixed itself. Then after about 20 minutes of use my connection suddenly drops again and reconnects at 500kbps, "oh dear, something must be wrong!" I said as tried my hardest to keep my composure under yet another internet related problem.
Fast forward a whole five minutes and I've already reconnected and then been cut off yet again. So I reconnect and get cut off again...and again...and again. And oh look, during the typing of this post it's cut out yet AGAIN!!
Normally it cuts out regularly after I've been online for a good 5 or 6 hours, I'm not sure why, it isn't some system to prevent me from downloading too much is it? The only reason I haven't done anything about that is because It's just too much effort to contact Orange...but now (oh for goodness sake, I just got cut off again for the second time during typing this post ) but now, it disconnecting after a mere five minutes or less and my sync speed appears to be trampolining.
I've also had problems with static on the line, you can hear it on the phone, some days it'll be fine, others it'll be quite, erm, staticky? Is that a word? But for quite a while my net has been working ok, it's been bearable to the point where it's just enough to stop me from complaining. But now, it's just disconnnected for a third time during the post and this time it won't reconnect.
Sometimes making a phone call, or just receiving one causes the net to cut out, i've posted threads in the past concerning some of these things, but never fixed the problem, I don't know if it's all related or not.
So, should I get an engineer out to check the line? Should I call Orange? Should I play the waiting game?
(ooh I can finally connect again now, a whole 160kbps)
I'm using the master phone socket in the house, for the simple reason that that is the only one there is, I don't have any secondary lines or sockets or anything. My exchange is just down the road by the way. Any suggestions? Because I can't sit here and wait Three days for my connection to sort itself out, I've had to do that before and it drives me nuts. What can I do?! (it seems to be settled now at 160kbps... not very useful at all)

Well, i've been connected for almost an hour now at 160kbps. Seems to be stable. But I can't do a damn thing with 160kbps.
I also looked on the BT website and used that feature where you type in your postcode or phoen number and it gives you an estimated speed that your line can support, just to see how that compares with what I normally get. I putin my phone number and it told me a maximum of 0.5mb, wtf? Then I used my postcode and it told me 5.0mb. But it came up with the same exchange each time. What the hell? Does anything make sense in the land of the internet? Why does nothing work?
And sometimes I connect at 4.0mb sync speed on this connection, but speedtests show that I never go above 2000kbps. I used to get more than that though. Over 3000 before a long time ago. I just want to know what speeds I should be getting. What is it with sync speeds anyway? Why do I get 4mb sync speed yet I get less than half that in real world performance? Are the estimates I got from the BT site sync speed, or actual achievable download rates?
I'm so sick of being stuck at less than 2000 kbps d/l speed at BEST. It's just not acceptable in this day and age.
