We were on 2mb Orange with 2gb monthly allowance for £18 a month.
Our download and upload speed shown on my routers homepage was about 2020/220
About 2 weeks ago we changed to the home select package which is £20 a month for upto 8mb and unlimited download allowance.
The guy on the phone said we should get around 5mb and that it would take 10 working days to update the line for us to receive it.
10 working days was on 12th Feb and up to that point my router was showing download speeds of about 4000/448
The upload of 448 has remained the same, but the download keeps going down and up in a pattern like... 448, 512, 2600, 2100
Here is what my router shows at the minute...
and here is what the speed test shows...
We did get an E-Mail from Orange on the 13th Feb saying that the livebox will be updating soon and that it should be done between then and 6th March, but we don't use a livebox.
Why is the SpeedTest download so low as when I have done it before I was getting 2000/3000kb?
So could the fluctuating speeds be due to the livebox update and shall I just sit tight until the 6th March and hope it sorts itself out?
One last thing, what is this LLU and how do I know if I am on it?

Thanks a lot, Steve
It likely you're on Max not LLU (upstream 448 indicates that)
If you're not using a livebox then any updates don't affect you or the ADSL signal.
Run this >>>>> www.speedtester.BT.com and post the results. Also leave your router on all the time and over a few days the Max system will settle to a profile that will achieve the optimum speed.
LLU is where an ISP has its own equipment in or near your exchange providing ADSL rather than BT's, in your case it looks like Orange are buying in BT's Max services.
I'm trying to run the test on the link you sent me, but when I enter my login on the 2nd page it says its incorrect :S
I will leave my router on though to see if it settles as when I finish on the PC I always switch it off.
Could the dodgy download speed be down to my router being at the end of an old 25 foot telephone wire which I used in the days of 56k as our downstairs flooded a bit 2 days ago and I had to move the router upstairs?
Are you entering your broadband username ?....something like name.wanadoo.co.uk@fs. Don't use your email address.
Cabling and connections are important when it comes to getting a good ADSL signal.
It's quite possible that "old 25 foot telephone wire" is not helping ! Can you run tests using the main BT linebox with absolutely nothing else plugged in except your router ?
When I get home from University I'l post the results.
To be honest, I think it may be the old wire its connected to, as when it was connected directly to the phone plug I was getting the correct download speed but I can't re try it down there at the minute as the place is still wet and all the carpets are taken up etc.
So if it is that wire, could that be the explanation for the said speed on my routers homepage which is 2020 when it should be around 4000 or so which is was when the router was downstairs connected directly to the socket.
Edit - When I get home I suppose I could plug in the router just to test the speed and then disconnect it and put it back up stairs.

Well, as I said, you need good cabling and connections to maximise the ADSL signal.....with a phone signal you won't notice a slight degrade but your router will with the ADSL signal. No problem using extensions etc but use good quality, make sure all connections are 100%. Also disconnect any unnecessary connections in the main BT linebox and extension boxes see >>> http://www.dslzoneuk.net/socket.php and remove all the wires EXCEPT 2 and 5 because the others just act as a massive aerial especially if you have a number of extensions and they are just not needed.
You've proved to yourself that the main BT linebox gives the best performance so there must be something downstream of this box that's degrading the signal.
Well, I've just plugged the router into the master socket and the downstream and upstream values are the same and so are the results on www.speedtest.net
I know plugging it into the master socket should give me better results as it has been for the past 4 years.
Could there be a problem with Orange or could my line update be taking longer than 10 days?
Another thing I forgot to add, last night when I was playing online games, my ping kept on spiking to 400+ which hasn't happened before
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 350 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 2592 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 317 kbps
I don't know what they mean except the downstream and upstream, so if you could help

You really need to stay connected and run speedtester twice per day and keep a note of the results. IP profile should start to improve within 3 days. The downstream rate should stay more or less the same.
OK, I'l do that twice a day for however many days until its back to normal.
Another thing at the moment, when I watch videos on YouTube and they are buffering, it makes my ping go to 200-300 and it won't come down again until the video has stopped buffering.
Is that due to my bad connection speed at the minute?
The downstream rate and the profile are the important figures here.
The downstream shows in effect how good your connection is at the time, the more this varys the more unstable the line is. Ideally at the main socket the dwonstream should change very little if not at all in comparison to when it was on the extension cable.
The profile is a speed limit placed on the line by BT's automated system to try and keep it stable. The more your downstream changes, the more it has to reconnect and if you get any sudden low drops then it reduces the profile. The system re-examines the profile pretty often but it waits a length of time before it will raise it, in order to prove it's stable, upto 3 days.
A lot of people try the main phone socket trick and expect a sudden speed increase, it doesn't happen, the downstream should increase but the profile takes time to catch up with it.
The buffering thing will most likely be due to the limited bandwidth you have at the moment, yes.
