I am looking at leaving Orange and probably moving to Be (unless anyone else can recommend any better ISPs). I cannot be without the internet at the moment so I was wondering if anyone had any experience of migrating from Orange and if there is any downtime in between Orange stopping and the new ISP starting? A couple of hours is ok but when I switched to Orange last year from Tiscali the Internet was down for 5 days.
The experience I have had with Orange this last year makes me nervous that something will go wrong.

I wouldn't worry about migrating your downtime will be less than 20 mins as it will be LLU to LLU. If you plan to use Be's router all you would need is to plug it in and you will be online if you use your own will be 5 mins to configure it to Be's settings.

That's if you are lucky enough to get a MAC out of Orange. I have been trying for over 3 weeks. They acknowledge receipt of your request, promise it after 5 working days, but it never arrives. Every complaint is met with an email of apology, a promise to escalate the request and the MAC will arrive in YET ANOTHER 5 working days (from the date of your complaint)!!!! Of course, it still doesn't arrive. Phone calls have proved equally ineffective. Hopeless. Have now referred the problem to the ISPA in the hope they can sort it.

When I moved from Orange to BT i was down for Three days.. Orange decided to cut me off far too early. Something about BT not being able to connect becuase I was still with Orange. Mine was LLU to LLU aswell
If you moved from Orange to BT then it would have been LLU > IPStream. Same difference through as one connection has to be removed and another setup at the exchange. It should only take around 30 minutes but problems do sometimes happen.
