I have a Netgear router and over the last couple of months since an Orange speed upgrade I continally lose access to all sites, which I can get via the IP addressed so obviously a DNS issue.
I used OpenDNS and this worked, until I switched off the PC and rebooted. Then nothing again. Changed the DNS servers in the router and worked again...then reboot and I lose it.
What I have learnt is this...my router has the OpenDNS settings listed but when I ipcnofig/all on my PC on DNS it has 192.168.0.1. So this is a conflict, right?
What's going on? Anyone else have this? Thanks in advance.

When you enter the DNS servers in your router are you clicking "Apply" at the bottom of the page?
The other way is to open Network connections highlight your connection icon then right click on it choose >Properties scroll down and highlight "Internet Protocol (TC/IP)" v4 if on Vista click properties and there towards bottom you can manually put in OpenDNS servers click "apply" ok.
OpenDNS servers will now appear in ipconfig /all.

Yep, I tried this and didn't work. But 1) Should you have the router and the PC set to both or should the router then be set to "get automatically"..point is, is it bad to have PC and router set.
and 2) I did try this but didn't seem to work. At least there was no Internet connection once rebooted. Puzzling.
Lets start again tell me how your set up is? you must have configured it wrong
Cheers for the help.
Was running fine since first got broadband on a Netgear router, then Orange said they were updating my area and I would get a faster connection. Then began losing connection, couldn't access any sites, but the router said I was connected fine. Odd. So I thought it a DNS issue. Initially router was set to find DNS servers automatically, so put in the Orange DNS servers found on their site and it worked. Then next reboot it didn't. So added OpenDNS servers and it worked...next reboot it didn't. And so on. Meaning I can get Internet on each reboot BUT each time I must first change the DNS servers...
I typed in ipconfig/all and the PC (running XP) stated that the DNS servers were 192.168.0.2 (which is the ip to access the router) BUT the routers IP addresses were set, at that time, to OpenDNS.
So, as you'd advised, I changed through Network settings the PC's DNS settings also to OpenDNS but alas no connection.
Then in the router I set it to get automatically from ISP and low and behold I checked and it had changed the PCs settings back to 192.168.0.2.
I'm seriously confused and thinking I might as well give up on the router and try the Livebox...which I'd hate to have to do but the pain at having to reset the DNS servers each time is a nightmare.
Settings I'm using are...
Encapsulation: PPP over ATM
Multiplexing method: VC-Based
Virtual circuit: VPI=0 VCI=38
Authentication: CHAP
And MTU: 1458
and yes clicking APPLY each time I change the DNS servers.

Firstly the ip address of the router and to access should be 192.168.0.1, the 0.2 one is probably your computers IP.
If you could say what model router it is that would help too and wether you have the latest firmware installed on it which you can find out by logging in the router on the router status page at the top it will tell you then click on Knowledge Base at the bottom left and it will take you where to see if you have got the latest installed.
In the basic settings in the router under Internet IP Address tick "Get dynamically by ISP"
then where it says "Domain Name Server (DNS) Address" put a tick by
"Use These DNS Servers" and type in
Primary DNS : 208.67.222.222
Secondary DNS :208.67.220.220
Click Apply give it a minute or too then go to router status page and see if your connected ie: everything is filled in, the LAN port IP address halfway down the page should be 192.168.0.1. if all looks ok try and connect to the internet.
Also go to network connections highlight your connection scroll down and bottom left under details what is the IP address?

Running Netgear DG632 ADSL Modem Router and it has the latest firmware.
Already did all that you suggested, as I said have been using the OpenDNS servers
Primary DNS : 208.67.222.222
Secondary DNS :208.67.220.220

It's 192.168.0.1 and no connection. I can set it manually in XP to the OpenDNS servers but does this matter? What should Ipconfig/all reveal for DNS servers? Does it matter if it reads 192.168.0.1 and is this the problem? When using OpenDNS should it be set both in the router and the PC rather than "get automatically" on the PC.
Of course, it might be a faulty router and why i should probably try the Livebox. Thanks for all the help

The IP address of your pc shouldnt be 192.168.0.1 it shout be anything above that as that is your routers IP go to Network connections and where you typed in the DNS servers above that tick "Use the following IP address and type in 192.168.0.2 then in "Subnet Mask click in it it should go in automatically if not type in 255.255.255.0 then in "Default Gateway" type 192.168.0.1, so with that in and the DNS servers in below click ok and ok again highlight the connection again check bottom left of network connections make sure the ip address and subnet mask is there what you just put in and that it says "Manually Configured"then reboot your PC.
Then that part of ipconfig /all should look something like this
here

Tried all you suggested and got a sluggish load of some pages, but the rest failed. Then having lost patience I set up the Orange livebox and everything works fine. Could it then have been a faulty router? Though I did notice that the IP with the Orange Livebox installed was
192.169.1...rather then 192.169.0...
...should I have set an IP address with 1 rather than 0 in the Netgear router? Anyway, would love to get to the bottom of this but at least have Internet again.

No most routers have different IP addresses and ranges Netgears are always as above glad u can surf now i think it was definately a conflict of IP addresses you will probably find if you have to reconnect your Netgear at some point all will be fine, usually when changing over to a different make router its best to wait at least 40 minutes between.
If you have any more probs i would advise not to alter too much as going by many forums Orange are having a lot of problems the last few days.
